D3 and DX lens

Can I use a DX lens with the D3?
I'd like to buy the 17-55/2.8 DX lens for my D300, and use it also with the D3.
I know that for the D3 the 24-70/2.8 is the right choice, but then again I will loose the wide angle with the D300. (35mm is not enough)
Buying both lenses is no option at the moment unfortunaetly.
So, what happens when I use the 17-55/2.8 with the D3?

As I understand the reviews I have read you will be able to use any Nikkor lens with the D3. It will automatically sense whether it is a regular or DX lens and adjust accordingly.

You can even switch formats using regular lenses should you like. So if you buy say a 17-35mm full frame lense it will work well in FX mode but you could also change to DX mode to increase the range of it.
