Newbiebs perhaps silly question

Lens coatings don't seem to be the most important criteria for lens performance. Consider Pentax's SMC coating, for instance. SMC is rated by some as at least equivalent to T coating. And a few Pentax lenses are said to perform on par with Zeiss. The rest, however, are inferior to Zeiss, even though they have the SMC coating. Clearly other factors are at play.

IN REPLY TO MESSAGE FROM ART SCHLAMAN:

I an concidering buying an RTSIII body and I was wondering if my MM lenses will work on it. I have never been quite clear about the difference between the MM and AE lenses etc. Can anyone fill me in?

Thanks

MY REPLY:

Hi Art,

No problem...but:

MM stands for ‘Manual (Exposure) Mode’ and means the aperture ring will not control your exposure settings automatically by adjusting it to your preferences. Exposure control will only work when it is set to the M program.

AE stands for ‘Auto Exposure’; like it implies by turning the aperture ring you will indirectly adjust the exposure when the camera is set to the A program (aperture program).

The RTS III is a great camera, and I hope this helps you out (By the way sorry for posting this message under this thread, I do not think you question is silly!)
Regards and happy shooting, Vincent

Or check eBay for books on the RTS III and Zeiss lenses!

Vincent,

I'm not sure that is correct. MM I believe means "Milti-Mode" (and has the green colored smallest aperture number) and allows the camera to use shutter priority.

The AE lenses are the earlier lenses (without green colored f stop), and isn't guaranteed to *work* in shutter priority mode.

Austin

Thanks Austin, you are right...now I am the one that is being silly here ;-), my appologies to Art and thank you for correcting me.

Vincent

Austin,
I am not 100% sure but RTS3 has no P mode, so MM lenses could be used on but only one mode that can be useful for MM lens is Tv. Am I right? I havent seen RTS for a long, so... just my consideration.
Pavel

Well! Slap me down with a wet kipper ..... Pavel is right ..... only(?) TV mode!

Art could look here for MM/AE discussions

No, Bob, no one will slap you with a....wet fish or another beast!!! You did here a lot and sent many perfect advices, including me. Your number of postings is admirable, i wish you all the best and many, many nice photographs you certainly will do, you kyocera kid!
Pavel
ps: it does not mean MM lenses has no sense with rts3. Just wondering, why rts has no P mode. Real, old, rough pro- photographer do not need something like P (cannot set neither exp. time nor curtain (aperture)) on their own...? :)

In every case, Tv stays, sometimes -very useful.
