Nice timing and angle. You captured the black feathers perfectly, which is usually the tough part of Red Wing Blackbirds.

Nice posture. The first time I went to the USA I arrived with no bird field guide and little research in pre internet days. Arrived at the first site near Homestead in Florida and saw loads of RW Blackbirds displaying on old reeds but I had to wait for the information centre shop to open to find out what they were!
 
Thank you everyone. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time for this one.

Red-winged blackbirds are common throughout North and Central America breeding in marshes where their call is distinctive. They are quite territorial and in breeding season will flare their tails and show off their wing patches to attract much plainer, brown streaked females.

I know from experience that the worst thing you can do is photograph one of these black birds with a bright sky behind them.
