20D Metering

Hello everyone. First time posting here. Two weeks ago I found a quirk with my 20D while shooting with the Canon Remote Switch RS-80N3. I noticed that the meter in the viewfinder gave me a different reading than the meter on the LCD on top of the camera. At times they differed up to two stops. This totally baffled me and wondered if my camera was malfunctioning or if it is some type of strange metering function that activates with the remote attached. I haven't noticed it while shooting without the remote release.

Has anyone heard or had a similar experience?? I'd appreciate any thoughts.

Thanks in advance!!

Best regards,

Al

Hi! Could it be that light going in throught the viewfinder affects the meter? This happens on many film cameras, and so will give the 'true' reading with your eye up to the viewfinder (you block incoming light with your head) - when you look at the LCD, light goes in and affects the reading. Is it always reading more light on the LCD??

Well, see Instruction Manual, page 89: "During self-timer or remote switch (optional) operation when your eye does not cover the viewfinder eyepiece, stray light might enter the eyepieceand affect the exposure when the image is captured. In such a case, use the eyepiece cover." Eyepiece cover is located on the strap. You might feel unconfortable to use it, then just cover the viewfinder with your hand, without touching the camera. Or use your hat :) Was this zhe answer to your problem?

Hehehe, you know, I'd been wondering what that funny thing on my strap was!!! I will have to test that theory but it makes perfect sense to me. Thanks for your replies Neil and Cristian. I appreciate your help.

Best regards,

Al

You're wellcome. But, by the way, that "funny thing on the strap" is not much fun to use. Take the advise with the hat - this is the best one :)
