2x Converter for Macro Shots

Thanks, Marc. Prices do not seem to have moved much for a few years ... which is not a bad thing!

Cheers, Bob.

Hello Bob Letsche,

I apologize for not thanking you sooner for your superbly addressing the questions I have put to you. I have just arrived from a working trip only to find literally hundreds of e-mails waiting, many requiring an immediate response.

I must convey how deeply impressed I am by your concise, yet complete and highly informative response to my converter questions, dare I mention how quickly you responded. I was truly awed. I had to reread your response a few times in order to take in the full picture you presented.

Before I left for the trip I did manage to find the Mutar III and read the instructions. I must say I found your response far easier to understand as it presented a much clearer and fuller picture of the pros and cons of the various Mutars, the 2x non-Macro and 2x Macro converter than my Mutar instuction sheet provides.

Had I understood the nature of the 2X Macro converters years ago I too may have decided to forgo some of my longer lenses. I can fully appreciate your reasons for converting : ) at least on paper : ) I look forward to locating a couple and to putting the Macro converters to the test.

The idea behind coupling the 50mm 1.4 to get 1:1 is fascinating. I can easily visualize and appreciate the flexiblity, convienience and cost effectiveness of using a Macro converter on such a lens and others. I also like the idea that one can reduce the number of lenses one carries when not doing extremely fussy work. You are certainly on to something.

I may now realize my dream of leaving behind heavy lenses when shooting simply for myself or on less demanding prodjects while still having the flexibility, convienience and ease of such a small magnification device, reduction in cost is always a nice feature. Sounds wonderful. Sounds Ideal.

One other thing I like to state is that I sincerely do appreciate the efforts, contributions, the spirit of sharing and professionalism of everyone that contributes to this forum. Like Bob, I too have learned a great deal from this site as a result of all your expertise and input on varous threads. All your contributions and efforts are most appreciated. That I was remiss in stating so more clearly was simply due to fatigue and the lateness of the hour when I posted my iniitial questions directed to Bob on this tread.

Bob and All many thanks;

Regards;

G. Ashton

Well Lotusflower .... it's probably the first time I've been accused of(complimented on?) being concise!

I'll kindly accept anyone's donation of unused Mutars, and find good homes for them

(deposit them in plain brown padded envelopes and await my drop off instructions!

In the meanwhile, another field shot taken at around 1:1 with the 50/1.4 + 2x Macro Converter. Almost certainly supported only by a monopod, focussed by gently leaning backward and forward until the subject (Libellula quadrimaculata) appeared sharp in the viewfinder, probably at f8, with a single TLA30, on camera, set up for daylight fill-in.

It appears to have been scanned at only approx 1200ppi, on my aged Nikon Coolscan LS20.

Full frame 1745 x 1179 reduced to 300 x 203

300 x 300 selection from original 1749 x 1179 (no alteration from original disk file)

Just for fun, I resized the above 300 x 300 by 300% (900 x 900) and then took a 300 x 300 selection from that. Here it is ... (remember the original scan was only 1200ppi !)

Have fun with your 2x Macro, everyone.

Cheers, Bob.

If it's not for critical photog you might look at aftermarked macro lenses such as Phoenix or Vivitar. I have a Sakar macro zoom that does a find job.
