8080 WZ NOTHING but PROBLEMS

Well everyone, I'm about to move on to my 5th 8080WZ against my better judgement.

The 1st one I bought had problems locking up and turning off when reading pics off the memory cards.

The 2nd one was lost by DHL.

The 3rd one was purchased the day before my Architectural Photo Trip to Barcelona. This worked perfectly on the first day, then halfway through the second day - the autofocus mechanism broke and sounded like a photocopier going mad !!

The 4th one was purchased this morning - only to find once I'd charged the battery - that only 1 out of 8 times of pushing the power button would it actually work !!

What is going on ?

Surely I can't be the only person who's had problems with this camera....can anyone shed some light before I move onto my 5th Camera...

I didn't have any of those problems.My camera seems to be okay. I am not entirely happy with the camera though. I shoot a lot of raw images. With my camera it takes about 13 seconds to write to the card. During that time the camea is useless. If I'm shooting JPEGs the cameras just fine. I was disappointed after all the good things I read about this camera then forking out a Grand.
Perhaps if you're having these problems you should look to another brand

Sorry to here you are having such bad luck, I only say bad luck because I have had my C8080 since May and have not had one problem. At another forum I have only read one other person having a problem with the auto focus, after having the problem repaired he was fine. I could understand Olympus having a bad batch of C8080's out there but three different cameras with three different problems just don't sound right. It would make me switch brands.

As far as using the RAW setting, the length of time it takes to write a RAW file to memory is a common characteristic of any brand within the C8080's level. Nothing to get disappointed about. A photo at SHQ JPEG is probably an average of 2.8MB and a RAW is somewhere around 12MB. If you want a Camera that can take RAW photos quicker than that you will have to get a much more expensive DSLR that can support high speed memory cards.

I know what you're saying and I just still can't beleive my bad luck!!

All the reviews of this camera rave about it's build quality and how impressive it is...I have looked to other manufacturers but without spending a whole lot more I don't think I will find anything as good with 8MP resolution...

I would predominantely use it the camera for duplicating large format images with a 54" wide printer - so the 8MP res is very important.

I will let you know how I get on with Olympus customer services and the next camera...

when taking pictures at 400 asa the results are really disappointing. at or below 100 asa the camera takes beautiful pictures. i save shq because of the time it takes to save raw or tiff. 400 asa is not really fast, so what is the problem? does anyone know why the limit on good pics? <> also, the camera can take pics at 1/4000 second. where do i get the light to get that kind of shutter speed? <> hope to hear from a lot of you on this one. thanks.
 
I just sent out in my back yard and shot some picture @ ISO 400. The results seem to be pretty good for me about on par with 400 speed film. For me this camera does what I wanted. I wanted a +5mp camera with lots of features. It came down to this one or the $1,800.00 leica Digilux 2.
I'm not sorry I got it but I guess that I learned that if I'm not going to be disappointed then I have to do more research before I buy. I only did minimal research with this camera.It isn't exactly what I excpected.
So I'm going to New Mexico in two weeks and I'll be packing my Leica CL, my Nikon D70 and my C8080. That should cover about all my shooting situations Sorry for rambling on...

Sorry - I realize I didn't respond to the question about where you can shoot and shoot at a 4000th - Well, if you're shooting at 200 iso outdoors on a bright day, you'd be shooting at apx f 11-16 at a 200th, 8-11 at a 500th, 5.6-8 at a 1000th, 4-5.6 at a 2000th, and 2.8-4 at a 4000th....
 
Despite the fact that I am supported by Olympus, I would argue with the contention that the C8080 produces results at 400 iso on a par with 400 asa film. When shooting film I shoot almost exclusively Tri-X, and that almost always rated at 800, and the C8080 at 400 can't touch Tri-X at 800. The E-1 defintely can - it gives me results very similar to film right up to 3200. But the sensor of any of the 8 mgp P&S cameras is just too damn small to do it. However, shooting outdoors in New Mexico, it should do beautifully for you.
