Alaska

Will be going to the Alaska Inside Passage on a small ship (70 people) with lots of opportunities to go out in “Kodiaks” and go ashore for hikes. I plan to take my G1 and G2 bodies. Slides or prints? What speed film? I have all the lenses (16,21,28,35,45, 90 and 35-70). Which should I take?

David,

Take the 16,21,28,35,45,90 & 35-70...both bodies
and that's it....not one piece more...okay a flash and tripod.

You lucky dog!

David-

I'm going to Lucca, Tuscany this summer and I'm taking my 16, 21, 28, 35,45,90, 35-70, both G2 bodies, a flash and a small Gitzo tripod. I found a great Tamarac bag that all of it fits into with all the extra gadgets (spirit level, cable release, oh ya...film). The case is neat because not only does it open like a suitcase, but it also has an opening at the top so I can access lenses quickly...plus, it is not heavy or cumbersome to carry. I'll get the model number for you, if you have interest. Maybe I can take a picture with my ND and post it so you can see how I reorganized the guts of it. Have fun. Greg "Al" Larson

David,

I should have included more in my last comments; I head to France next month; Chamonix and surroundings....and like Greg and my original response to your question....I'm taking every lens I have and two G bodies.

I've been experimenting with print films, but cannot let go of my passion for slidefilms; so I'll be shooting Velvia 50/100 for the country side and cityscapes and Fuji Reala for street scenes. Looking for a good fast film for night shooting if anyone has suggestions.

Greg,

I'd like the model # to the bag. I have plenty to choose from, but none have the perfect combination of low profile, ease of use and space.

Happy Traveling Gents!

Lucca? you are close to Cinque Terre. Don't miss that. Italy is my favorite spot. I sell more images from Italy than anywhere else.

David,
You can, of course, take everything. I would take the 35-70, the 21 and the Hologon: the zoom has to go on the G2, the 21 on the G1 and the 16 in the bag for some special shot. (I like to minimize lens-changing).

I shoot mainly slides. I prefer Kodak Elite Chrome 200 (not the "extra color"): very fine grain, one extra stop and nice colors.

If you like more intense colors, on just in case you don't want overcast days look overcast, Velvia 100 is supposedly better and as fine-grained as Velvia 50 (but I have not used it yet, so I don't know by personal experience).

Enjoy yor trip.

Have made that journey a number of times also on a smaller ship. Good decision to go on the smaller, you will get closer. Are you going on the Alaska? The Canadian or both? Expect to get wet, cold, and have the best time you can imagine. The weather will most likely be overcast and forget about buying film, take everything you will need with you. A tripod is a necessity for times on shore and worthless on board. Bring along your favorite fast film: you have a great chance of day after day of overcast. If you are going to Sitka do not forget to visit the Raptor Rehabilitation Facility just outside of town, great close ups. Things will happen unexpectedly while cruising so go no where with out your camera (s). After your camera the most important piece of equipment is your rain gear; boots, pants, jacket and hat and gloves. Each time we go we run into many individuals in their golfing rain gear and that will just not get it done. I know that the calendar says spring and summer but you are much better off to take it and not need it than be with out; you will get no good shots through the windows of the ship.

Never shot my G but mostly the AX and RTSIII with my long lenses and often the mutar.

I got hooked 10 or so years ago and can not go back often enough. You will have a wonderful time but be prepared. Good luck and be safe,
Steve

Consider this.

Going to Alaska..... Just take one prime lens with you.... or if that is too much of a challange take two or three but only have one with you at one time.

Years ago when visiting the sail boats in Baltimore's inner harbour I imposed that rule on myself so that I would have more time to take photos. My usual pick was a Nikklor 24mm. Today it would be the Contax 25mm.
