I'll be posting pictures (compilations) of the two nests in our yard of yellow crested night herons from two years in a row. One was actually on the neighbor's property, but they were almost side by side. Each nest produced a clutch of four, all of which hatched.
This is Busy, named because he was always busy: first one up in the morning, first to grab the food, first to venture away from the nest and (sigh,) the first to leave the nest. I could pick him out from his three siblings because he had the most fuzz on his head.
Busy also had a weird quirk - he was fascinated with chewing branches. He'd take a bite, spit it out, take another; and do this for an hour. None of his siblings or his parents ever did this. We wondered about him.
But we just adored them - they arrive in May and leave in August, and it was so much fun watching them grow up. Unfortunately, this year was a disaster: only one pair returned, and they lost all four eggs in a windstorm. I'm not sure they'll return again after losing their nest, but I can hope.
