{BnF at Tolbiac 1

In the acronym {BnF for Bibliothèque nationale de France, the opening brace { symbolizes the fact that this public institution groups together seven sites, including Richelieu, the historic site, and François Mitterand, at Tolbiac, both in Paris. The latter is the subject of the series starting today. The next photo shows two of the four towers that form the most visible part of the Tolbiac site. Each tower is in the shape of an open book, which sounds nice for a library, but their very large glazed surface immediately posed a problem, as sunlight is bad for documents. For this reason, the windows of these towers were fitted with blackout panels. The windows on the storage floors are permanently closed.

Between the towers, on the lower level, is a forest garden to which users of the surrounding reading rooms have no access. This is because the microscopic inhabitants of the forest garden are not allowed to contaminate the books that the library is charged with preserving.

The beautiful outside stairs leading up to this library proved slippery and dangerous for visitors in wet weather. It was therefore necessary to provide access areas equipped with ramps like those shown below.
