Coolpix 5000 and 2X Teleconverter

Hello all,
I have a CP5000. I am interested in the teleconverter TC-E2 (2x). What are your comments on this? Is it any good? Thanks in advance. Ann

Sorry Ann, I don't have that lens, so I can't very well pass judgment on that item, but I would think your internal tele should be more than sufficient without the additional weight and size restric= tions. You'll need a rock steady tripod when using that lens, just another encumbrance. Good luck, Rollo

I purchased the lens a number of years back when I bought my CP990, and kept it for the CP5000. It has a zoom range equivalent to 139mm to 170mm without vignetting. Since it is only a maximum of 170mm, it is still easily useable. If you have used a 200mm on a 35mm camera, it is very comparable.

Though I only use it on perhaps 10% of my shots, it is still worthwhile having, and I normally carry it. It is light and compact, unlike the 3x.

It is a moderate telephoto, and simply does what it is expected to do. Nothing spectacular, no particular problems, it is there when it is needed, a workhorse - not a racehorse.

Thank you for your input on the TC-E2. Loved your website. I will add it to my favorites!
My TC-E2 arrived. I'm constantly getting underexposed images with it. Can you tell me what I'm doing wrong? It's fine when I'm aiming at bright subject but anything in the shadow and it goes dark or completely black! I put a SB-20 speedlight on it- only good at close distances.

Most odd. Is it possible that you have the camera set on shutter priority or manual? If set on manual for sunlight and no adjustments are made for shadow, then underexposure is absolutely certain. If it is set on shutter priority, you have less than a 2EV potential margin either way with less than three f-stops for the camera to choose.

I have always shot on aperture priority, since that gives a margin of 8EV, with something like 16 shutter speeds. I just tried it on full automatic newbie mode, and it worked fine there too.

If switching to aperture priority or program mode does not do it, get back to me and we will brainstorm further.
