G2 Manual Focus bad behavior

It seems like there is quite a range of play in the manual focus indicator. For ex&le, I switched to SAF, the meter read 3.8. Then I switched to MF and rotated the dial (very slowly both ways) on the same target. The indicator read that it was in focus from about 3.4 to 4.2. Is this pretty normal? I've been using the AF function on the camera but wanted to start using MF more often. This is a broad range when shooting wide open no???

To be clear, the indicator, of course, is the one in the viewfinder. And of course, I followed all the advice in the manual. Strong, contrast and all else, that wasn't the problem. But the range that the MF finds acceptable isn't to me. If this is really normal, then I will only use it for AF (and maybe start shopping around).
