image file size reduction when editing

My original photo clocks in at 4.45 MB but the edited photo is now only 1.66 MB. (I removed some scratches and darkened the color) Why is there this large loss of file size? Is this something to be concerned about? Is there a way to get around it? I'm shooting in jpeg & not interested in RAW

I too shoot mainly Fine/Large. For me, substantial loss of memory ONLY occurs when I crop. If I enhance the image via exposure, or color, or noise reduction, or sharpen, or whatever I see only very, very minor memory loss. I'm using Mac Iphoto for image adjustment. Perhaps your image editing software is causing this problem?
