Iran

I travel quite a lot. As a Brit expat based in Saudi I have good opportunities. The biggest and best surprise for me was Iran. Absolutely fantastic for photography. No problems with the people, in fact they often ask you to take photos of them, even the women. I was often approached by families asking if I could take a photo of their children or husbands asking if their wives could have their photos taken with me. Our tour group was mobbed in Necropolis by a group of teenage Iranian schoolgirls on a school outing. They all had camera and wanted photos of us. In fact I saw many Iranians with cameras enjoying themselves throughout the country.

Loads of architecture, no restrictions in mosques at all. The streets are very safe, you really can point a camera anywhere. Good street art with all the Ayatollah paintings everywhere, cafes, tea houses, old roads and bridges, tribes, afghanis. FAntastic.

Of course it may be difficult to go there at the moment. It has never been easy. The best way is to go on a tour, you will probably get a visa. Independant travellers can virtually forget it, only the very lucky get visas. If you`re from the US Iran is a possibility, most of my group were US citizens, all working at the same university as me in Saudi. None of them had any problems, they were all welcomed with open arms. In fact, for one of the group this was his first trip outside the US (Except for his job in Saudi) initially he was very nervous and had checked the state dept for advice, only to end the trip with the opinion that the state dept must be talking about a different Iran.
This was before 11/09, so things may be different now with regard to the visas, check it out.

If i had the chance i would go back immediately
