Just got my bigma repaired, looking for tips so it doesn't happen again

I just had my 50-500 (with OS) repaired. The autofocus and OS stop working, and the repair note said the main PCB was replaced. I'm using a Nikon D7000.

I'm looking for tips and precautions I should take so this doesn't happen again. I now know I should turn off OS when removing the lens, but what about when simply turning off the camera? If that doesn't matter, do I turn off OS before or after turning off the camera? Do these same questions also apply to the AF/MF switch?

I also read that I should not hold the lens from the focus ring when using autofocus. Is this true?

Anything else?
