Nikon speedlight SB50 DX

I've a beautiful F4 - Ilike it very much - and I tried with a speedlight SB-50 DX and a Sigma 24-70 f2,8.
F4 and Sigma without speedlight are ok.
Something strong happened. The sppedlight doesn't work but the zoom is ok and everything seams ok.
Thus some one has some experience in this "arrangement"? What's happening wrong?
