Question for TLA200 working with ARIA

I am a new user of ARIA, and would like to have a propreitary flash (3rd party's product also be considered) which is small size with TTL flash control and is suit for travelling to accompany with. Would anyone please clarify/advise me if TLA200 is compatible with following functions when work with ARIA??!?
a. Flash ready light in camera view finder
b. Correct exposure light in camera view finder
c. Automatic flash sync
d. TTL flash control
e. TTL fill-in flash control
f. TTL flash exposure correction
g. Synchronisation with 1st or 2nd shutter blind
h. Flash range indication
i. Automatic flash programs

AFAIK, since it has only a 3-pin contact:
a,b,c,d: yes
e: no automatic flashlight reduction
f,g: no
i: yes
BTW: I bought a used TLA 20 for that pourpose. It's nearly as small and light, is not affected by large lense diameters and takes rechargeable AA-batteries.

Hi Ramon,
The little switch on the back of the TLA 20 has three positions (besides <off>): <auto> brings it into TTL-mode (variable guide number between 4 and 20), <manual hi> produces a flashlight with maximum power (gn 20), <manual low> the same with minimal power (gn 2,8).

It works, but only in full manual mode on the RTSII (the TLA200 has no own sensor and the TTL works different on the TLA200 than on the older flashes).

The 159 is the only camera where I'm not sure. TTL definitely doesn't work with olders (RTSI, RTSII, 137, 139) and it definitely works with all cameras newer (167,ST,RX,RTSIII,Aria) than the 159.

no, I'm not 100% sure. I took the info from previous discussions of the Contax mailing list. The manual doesn't say which cameras don't work. As I don't own a RTSII I haven't tested it.

BTW: the TLA200 doesn't support any "advanced" features like second curtain sync. It's a plain manual and TTL-only Flash like the TLA20 but with a different type of TTL flash-control (only one, instead of two additional pins). So probably the info you got wasn't accurate either.

But I can say for sure it does not work on the RTSI, 137, 139. And I can say for sure it does work on the 167, RX and Aria.

BTW: The TLA200 suffers heavily from the red-eye syndrome and sucks expensive Li Batteries like hell. I pretty quickly purchased a TL20 as well to get rid of these problems

Although it's been a while when Chan asked it's initial question I would like to correct Marks statements regarding the initial question who started the thread.

Question E: Yes (what's the difference for the electronics between fill-in and non fill-in anyhow? a TTL-flash always "fills in" in normal operation.)

Question F: through exposure compensation button on the Camera. (See manual for details)

question G,H: no. It's a pretty low-end flash

question I: the TLA200 has no sensor, so no automatic programs!

One more thing worth noting about the TLA-200 is the fact that it isn't very high above the hotshoe, and therefore you get a big shadow if you use the 28-85 3.3-4 zoom. I have the Aria and TLA-200 and I couldn't use the TLA-200 when the 28-85 lens is zoomed out to the 28mm end because the lens casts a big shadow at the bottom of the frame. This fact is mentioned in the TLA-200 manual.

I also found that the TTL function with the TLA200 on the Aria is quite unreliable. I now only use it in manual mode, and measure the needed aperture with a flash meter. By the way, although the spec is GN20, I find by measurement that the TLA200 is really only GN16(m).
