Steam on the south coast line

The NSW Rail Museum recently ran a heritage train from Sydney to Wollongong, a regional city 83 kilometres south. Here are a few photos from that day.

Really nice! #1 and #3 - great exposure/IQ with deep DOF. A classic steam locomotive right out of a storybook. The B&W - very fitting. #2 - that's excellent @ 300mm! Super vantage point. Serendipitous? Or did you plan things out in advance? Probably the latter! Were all of these shots taken on the same day? How much running around did you have to do? Regardless of the effort involved... this would be a FUN pursuit!

Steam Trains are fascinating pictures. I shot one recent too last year early December. I will dig it out and post maybe. Bloke at work preferred it over the deer shots I showed him taken the same day which was interesting because deer are well adored by most public.

Yes, I did do a bit of planning. The first shot was from a platform that I knew would be quiet and have a decent head-on view, albeit with the detriment I had to shoot towards the sun.

The train had a layover at its destination so I then had a few hours to do some other shooting and then drive to the lookout for the return trip. After that shot, I was able to take the freeway back to the third location with plenty of time as the train was going uphill most of the way to that point.
