Yellow-crested night heron

Last year I had not one but two pairs of yellow-crested night herons nesting in my yard. This year however, only one pair returned, and they only stayed a day. A week later, the male came back alone and was displaying next to the remains of the nest, but he only stayed an hour and moved on. Not sure what, but I guess there's something going on here now they didn't like (and did they break up)? Thanks!

There is a colony of them nesting in a cypress swamp that I often visit. But as many times as I've seen and photographed them, although I know they do it, I've never seen one displaying like that. You were in the right place and at the right time!

Great shot. Seen lots of the bird and lots of pictures of them but never seen a display. Sounds like others are not familiar with the display either. Lucky you!

I have also seen and captured many Herons but I have never been lucky enough to witness a display like this, really special.

I wish I could have recorded his calls. And even when both pairs nested last here year, I never saw them display either.
