2x Converter for Macro Shots

Help!
Am very interested in acquiring a 2x teleconverter for macro work. Searched eBay. There are 2 items described as "Vivitar 2x Teleconverter" both from the same seller but at very different prices. One is described as capable of 1:1 macro; the other says nothing. Also for sale is a Tokina 7 element teleconverter. Any suggestions appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike Blume

Mike - If you are wanting one of these because you have read the whole thread above, then make sure you get a 2x MACRO teleconverter! Not just any old 2x teleconverter (even if it is 7 element).

The one that says 1:1 sounds like the real thing.

The Vivitar and Teleplus 2x MACRO converters are identical 7 element macro converters, BUT they are different from all the other converters (no matter what make) that are described as "teleconverters".

There are a couple of alternative designs of Macro teleconverters, I have only played with one of the alternatives .... I was not impressed compared with the Vivitar/Teleplus. Physically, it looked quite different from the V/T.

I think there may be one of two other "re-badging" of the "trusted" V/T version .... I'll post a picture so you can compare.

Re-read this thread for more details, and if in doubt send the EBay ref to me via private post and I'll check it out for you.

>hi mike, i have used the vivitar MACRO 2 x teleconvertor which works well as a macro. the other (musch cheaper) is just a doubler.be careful which you buy. best henry

Here's 2 shots, first at infinity setting and second at 1:1 setting.

Quick identification guide of MACRO convertors.....

Only MACRO converters have a need for any sort of scale on the barrel. Ordinary converters need none.

AND

Only MACRO convertors have a rotatable barrel (to adjust the macro ratio).

(Bet someone will come up with a one in a thousand exception

Bob & Henry,
Gosh this is a great forum. Thank you both for your speedy replies to my question. I think I have the necessary information now. Much appreciated. I hope in future I will be able to contribute to this forum in some way commensurate with what I have already gained.

Addendum:
I know this doesn't belong in this thread, but forgive a newbie, I have searched elsewhere for the answer but no joy:
What do the colorful (and sometimes moving) emoticons mean? Who places them and how?
Mike.

Hi Mike, Go to the top of this topic page and you will see at the right hand side, help/instructions. Click on this and then click on formatting and choose special characters. You will see how to put smilies in. Leave out the \ch and the brackets and put a space between the last word and the special character. Hope this makes sense!
