Are there any Englishmen here?

Me too! I am going to have to wait a number of days for the results to come back, but rest assured I will post them up as soon as I have them.

Here be an Englishman

To your original question I am indeed an Englishman but I am more used to describing myself as British or a Londoner. :proud:

I also need to post up more images from my new best friend (203FE) and get busy taking more pictures.

I admit to waiting for some more gear to help improve my first efforts such as a new focussing screen, new WLF magnifier, new prism and a CLA'd 80mm FE Lens.

I am still thinking about the additional camera support I should go for - Tripod vs Monopod, Ball head vs flat platform, quick release or not etc.

Sometimes one can spend too much time in planning and acquiring more 'stuff'. Time is the most precious thing in life and sometimes the best policy is to just get on with it.

Regards

Kevin

Kevin,

There is a reasonable chance the 80 and correction lens will turn up this month.
As for tripods the thing is not only to watch out for a strong one but also one that does not discourage you to take it along.
Weight is the thing to watch out for.

I recommend the latest QR from Hasselblad p.n. 43326.
Older bodies will need an adapter plate p.n. 45152.
The QR is good value for money.

You are right it is better to get on with it.
What are you waiting for?

on the subject of tripods - I was thinking of something along the lines of a Manfrotto 055XPROB with the 460MG head.

Suitable?

I too have been thinking tripods/heads very recently.

I've seen the 055XPROB up close and it's not bad. However, I was very fortunate that a friend managed to find me a s/h Linhof Studio Deluxe which is better! (It's not black, but I can live with that...!) It's very light and VERY stable, with each leg having a strut back to the centre column, not to mention it's beautifully made.

As for heads, I was into pan/tilt and ball type jobbies until I started reading about geared heads - then I was done for. The ARCA Cube is totally mind-blowing (Partly for its price - 1700$ without case!!), and actually quite small. I fell for a Manfrotto 410 and was all prepared to push the 'buy' button until another very kind person found a 405 (Big Brother) which is now mounted on the Linhof.

The geared head, for me, gives all the control I would ever want - and it's really finitely/repeatably adjustable - unlike a normal ball head. This one is quite large, but I prefer a solid base and the fact that I can simply turn a knob to level everything up. I'm not in any particular hurry when I'm setting up, so the size/weight is less of a problem.

There's no point having a heavy tripod, you'll never take it out of the boot - from what I've seen of the 055XPROB it's light and sturdy and has the added advantage of being able to splay the legs virtually horizontally so that you can get a really low angle.

I was looking at the geared heads as well, as a matter of fact. I think it would be a really nice thing to have and I can definitely see the benefit. The way I use my Hasselblad is a very deliberate, methodical process - I think it would suit the way I work. :)

EDIT: I went into a camera shop to look at legs and heads and had a play with the 460MG - I wasn't too impressed if i'm honest. It was sturdy enough, sure but setting it level was purely done by eye, which I don't think would be suitable for the kind of work I want to do. They didn't have the 410 Junior geared head for me to try out, but I'm certain that I would be more happy with the way it worked compared with the 460MG, purely for accuracy.
