I arrive at the Lille braderie late Saturday morning. The place is packed.

Public transport is packed, and parking areas are saturated. For example, do not expect to park in one of the 2088 spaces in the 4 Cantons parking area unless you arrive on Friday evening or very early on Saturday or Sunday morning.

The number of mouths to feed is staggering.

If you decide to take a lunch break in the middle of the day, make sure you are seated in the place of your choice by 11:45 am at the latest. You will then have the privilege of eating in peace and quiet, while others queue in the sun waiting for tables to be vacated.

In any case, you will still be free to negotiate the price of the items that have caught your eye.

Choose

Forget about coming to the braderie by car, and opt for public transport. The Lille metro, now in its forties, was the first in the world to be automated. It takes you to Rihour station, right in the heart of the action.

The braderie guide tells us that the length of the stalls occupying the pavement is around 80 km. So it is out of the question to visit everything in two days, and you will have to choose. When you arrive on the surface, you will be presented with a color-coded map showing the type of vendor on each street. Yellow streets correspond to professional antique and second-hand dealers, who have paid for their space. Boulevard de la Liberté is the main example. If you decide to explore it, choose your time carefully to avoid the crowds. At the height of the day, you will only be able to see what the merchants have to offer if you move at a snail's pace. There are much quieter places, like this one.

If you choose to go there at the beginning of the day or in the late afternoon, you will also benefit from the low-angled light that highlights the objects.

This juxtaposition can enhance the interest of the items presented, and delight collectors looking for a particular model. As far as photography is concerned, I have not seen any really exciting collections, as the most interesting pieces are presented in rather isolated fashion.
 
Best-placed merchant award

From his comfortable armchair at the top of the steps leading to the entrance of a church, this merchant can watch the action out of the rain and sun.
