Buying an RTS III in 2003 A Few Concerns

Hi Wilson,

> My RX also has this data back which records exposure data as well as > time/date between each frame.

Are you sure it records exposure data as well? The RX I had only recorded the date between the frames, and the RX brochure only says it records date/time information.

Austin

Austin,

You are absolutely right. I have just looked at a negative strip and only date/time are recorded. It must have been a case of wishful thinking, pre-Christmas brain-fade, or most likely a combination of the two. Wilson

Hi Wilson,

> I think I will be looking for a data > back for my G2 but don't know if it records quite as much data. Wilson

BTW, the G2 data back is called GD-2, and it records everything, and has an intervalometer just like the Aria and AX data back. Again, I am not sure about your RX data back being more than a date back.

Austin

I'd suggest wishing for a data back for your G2 then ;-) They are expensive (B&H $560 or something like that), but I must admit, I really like the ones for my Aria/AX, and am getting one for my G2 soon.

Hi Austin!

The RX will definitivly record nothing than date and time, as does the RTS III. I you want to print aperture and speed outside the frame, you will have to switch to AX or Aria with their marvellous data-backs to have that feature. Nikon F80S and some data-backs of good old Nikon F4 and F5 do the same job (and have autofocus-lock, too). Ah, and some Pentax-Cameras so this, too, I've read.

That's what I thought, as I have an RTS-III and wish for a real datA back, like the Ax/Aria...and apparently, the G2 has a real datA back available.

Austin

Kim, In your original post you mention you are still unsure which Y/C Contax body to use. I don't know why the AX went out of production, but it is an amazing camera. I find the AF and the ability to turn it off are amazing. Don't dismiss it entirely, unless you have hold it and don't like it (or you are decided to buy new as opposed to used/refurbished). Owners of both RTSIII and AX may have more information on which make a decision. Good luck! Juan

Is there any distinct advantage of the RX over the Aria for general use? I'm replacing my original RTS but keeping the lenses.

AFAIK, only the focus/depth of field indicators on the viewfinder and the all-metal construction. I guess most peeople thought these were not "distinct enough" advantages, and the RX died. I have no experience with it.

Don,

The digital focus assist/DOF indicator on the RX by themselves would be worth the difference IMHO. This is especially true if you are using lenses in the 85 to 100mm range at relatively close distances. I also have an aversion to plastic bodies after poor previous experience with Olympus and Nikon bodies becoming distorted in hot climates, which was the main reason I first went to Contax nearly 20 years ago (I still have my 20 year old 139Q as a spare body and although it looks a bit the worse for wear, it still works perfectly).
