Flash units working or camera problem

I've recently purchased two flash units for my 7000 on ebay (1800AF and 2800AF). The manuals for both say that I should see rapid blinking flash icons in the viewfinder when the flash exposure is ok. I have only seen this when shooting a reflective surface from minimum range. Does this indicate a problem with the camera? (I haven't had the film developed yet, so I don't know how the exposures look).
