Fuji Medium Format: GF 45/2.8, FW update and new roadmap

Today is obviously Fuji day! One announcement after the other. This time it is regarding its new medium format line. There will be a new lens. GF 45/2.8, other new lenses in the new roadmap and there are firmware updates.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) has announced that it will release the “FUJINON GF45mmF2.8 R WR Lens”, the sixth lens in the GF Lens Series, in November, 2017. This product is a professional quality interchangeable lens for Fujifilm's medium format GFX 50S (43.8 x 32.9mm) digital camera. The “FUJINON GF45mmF2.8 R WR Lens” (hereinafter “GF45mmF2.8 R WR”) is a highly versatile wide angle lens with a focal length equivalent to 36mm (on a 35mm format) and maximum F2.8 aperture. Thanks to its compact and lightweight design (weighing only 490g), this lens is ideal for street and documentary photography.

FUJINON “GF Lenses” are high quality lenses featuring rich tone reproduction, unique color reproduction and high resolving power, designed to incorporate Fujifilm's optical technology. This lens has been designed to the highest standards to allow photographers the ability to create the best images possible. Fujifilm has already released the “FUJIFILM GFX 50S” (hereinafter “GFX 50S”), the first camera in the “GFX Series,” as well as five “GF Lenses”. All of which have proved popular among professional photographers and photo enthusiasts, who praise it for its ability to capture high levels of detail, giving the atmosphere a three-dimensional feel, and its compact, lightweight body for easy operation.

Like the other “GF Lenses”, the “GF45mmF2.8 R WR” is equipped with resolving power to support further enhancement of image resolution in future. Thanks to the Nano GI coating, this lens offers clear depiction performance with reduced ghosting and flare. Weather and dust resistant, the lens can be used in temperatures as low as -10°C. It combines high performance with high reliability, making it an ideal photography tool for professional photographers. Because it's compact, lightweight and portable, it's an optimal lens for snapshots and documentary photography, enabling photographers to shoot natural photos without intimidating their shooting subjects.

Fujifilm has unveiled the latest development roadmap for the “GF Lenses” on the same day*. With the roadmap, details of a “Telephoto Prime Lens” and a “Tele Converter” are unveiled. The addition of the two new lenses brings the “GF Lens” line-up to a total of eight lenses, supporting a wide range of user needs.

  • High resolving power
    With a construction of 8 groups and 11 elements, using one aspherical lens and two ED lenses, the “GF45mmF2.8 R WR” delivers high image quality and reduces aberrations. By adopting an inner focus system which moves the six lenses, the lens is able to deliver high quality images while reducing fluctuations of the aberrations caused by the change of shooting distance. The lens is even able to reduce ghosting and flare, caused by incident light from diagonal angles, and produce clear images, thanks to the use of Nano GI coating.

    With a maximum diameter of φ84mm, a length of 88mm and weighing only 490g, this lens combines a compact and lightweight design with the best possible image quality.

  • Dust and weather resistant, capable of operating in environments as cold as -10°C
    The lens has been sealed in ten areas, allowing you to shoot with confidence, even in dusty environments or in light rain.
  • High operability
    The aperture ring has a C position (command dial mode) on the camera body that allows the lens aperture value to be changed to suit the photographer's preference. A locking mechanism has been added to the A (Auto) and C positions to prevent unintended movements of the aperture dial.

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) is proud to announce the latest development of the “G Mount Lens Roadmap”, the interchangeable lens range for the medium format mirrorless digital camera “GFX 50S”.
Details of a “Telephoto Prime Lens” and a “Tele Converter” have now been unveiled.

＜Lenses revealed the specification＞

1. Telephoto Prime Lens “GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR”
“GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR” is a telephoto prime lens with a focal length equivalent to 198mm (on a 35mm format) and maximum F4 aperture, enabling a beautiful bokeh effect for shooting portrait and landscapes images.

2. Tele Converter “GF1.4X TC WR”
The “GF1.4X TC WR” is a high-performance teleconverter capable of multiplying the focal length by 1.4x.
Compatible with “GF250mmF4 R LM OIS WR”, its focal length will be 350mm (equivalent to 277mm on a 35mm format).

FUJIFILM Corporation (President: Kenji Sukeno) will release a free firmware update for the FUJIFILM GFX 50S (“GFX 50S”) medium format mirrorless digital camera. Due in late November 2017, this update reflects professional GFX users’ requests for improving usability and adding new functions.

This firmware update will add new support for “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO” software that allows the user to connect the camera to a computer via USB cable for developing raw files in camera. The new firmware will also improve third party studio flash controller usability and add new functions designed to improve operability.

Firmware Version: FUJIFILM GFX 50S(Ver.2.00)

  1. 1. Support “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO”
    Once connecting a camera to a computer via USB cable, the “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO” enables users to convert RAW files with X Processor Pro. Fast batch processing will also be available. The “FUJIFILM X RAW STUDIO” can be downloaded from the FUJIFILM website for free.
  2. 2. Improve radio flash controller usability
    The upgrade allows users to shoot with compatible third party studio flash in high speed sync. or TTL mode via their radio controllers.
  3. 3. Support for backup/restore of camera settings via FUJIFILM X Acquire
    Once connecting a camera to a computer via USB cable, the “FUJIFILM X Acquire” allows users to backup/restore camera settings to/from a file. Copying all camera settings from one camera to another is available.
  4. 4. Addition of “Eye Sensor + LCD Image Display” in the View Mode
    The update gives the “Eye Sensor + LCD Image Display” option in the View Mode that allows you to shoot through the viewfinder and check images on the LCD, just as you would with an SLR.
  5. 5. ON/OFF for 1/3-step shutter speed adjustment
    The update allows you to turn off the Command Dial's function to adjust shutter speed by 1/3 steps in order to prevent unintended adjustments.
  6. 6. Addition of “Shoot Without Card” mode
    With the update, you can have the “Shoot Without Card” mode turned OFF so that the camera will not shoot when there is no SD card inserted.
  7. 7. Addition of “-6” and “-7” to EVF's brightness setting
    The update will extend the “EVF Brightness” setting options to “-6” and “-7” so that, even in an extremely low-light condition, the brightness of the EVF does not distract you from shooting.
