G3 wish list

Perhaps the G3 could have a calculator for those who can’t work out that there are approximately – as near as doesn’t usually make a difference, 3 feet to a metre?

Clive

If you're doing portraits, as I do, and if you like to get close to your subject, as I do, and if you're into manual focusing, as I am, and if you like to shoot at available light (open lens !) as I do, INCHES make a difference, let alone feet. Those of us lucky enough to have been brought up with inches cannot think as fast in meters as we can in inches. It's a matter of convenience, and convenience translates into higher quality with your grab shots. We've been willing to dish out big bucks for the Contax G. Is it too much to ask that the manufacturer consider our needs, even though we're only Yanks or Brits ?

first I thought displaying the distance in another scale can't be rocket science. But come to think of it, rockets - meters - inches, better don't ask NASA to do the conversion :)
Back to the topic.
Do you guys realy look on that small scale on your G2? Perhaps measuring the distance to the object with a folding rule or tape measure, or are you that good in estimating distances down to inches? I know photographers who do that in the studio with LF cameras but not with a 35mm rangefinder.

Volker

Hi Volker,

I do, with the G2 and especially with the T3, when doing close-up work. It's a reality check I find necessary in confirming the autofocus system has correctly locked onto the subject. Extreme closeup work is one instance where I can work faster using the Hologon with its traditional distance-DOF scale.

FWIW, metric tape measures are very hard to find in the States (I'm still looking for one, myself).

Hey Werner, don't include the Brits in this - we've been using the metric system for over 30 years (except for road signs which are still in miles)... I'm pretty sure scientific and engineering notation is always in metric units worldwide, so perhaps it's the Americans who should come up to date ;-)

So you set a wide aperture, get close to your subject and focus manually. What difference does it make if the LCD says 0.5m or 19" if you set the focus correctly using the camera's focus sensor?

Up to date? My gosh man, where have you been? Our tech is all made in asia, we've lost the ability to put men in space past low earth orbit, our rail system sucks...

The only thing we've got going for us is Enron and advanced weapons platform design!

Oh, Enron's out of business? Why doesn't somebody read the news to me? I'd read it but I never graduated high school.

And as Simon says: 7/8 of us are using metric anyway.

Hmmmm...yes, but their biggest market isn't.

My new N Lens has both meters and feet. Oh..this is the wish list.. I Wish I could get a lens faster than 2.0 for my G2

Hi Rick,

WOW! I have to try that once.
I've used my G2 just once with a tape measure, some five minutes after I've put a lens on it for the first time :).

The german pendant to radio shack has an ultrasonic measure, Sonarmeter RF888, made by Integrated Display Technology LTD which can display in imperial and metric.
Their website is in german only
