General Flash Questions for Contax G1/G2

Ok, I've read through the contax flash questions and I'm still confused. This is the equipment that I have and don't plan to buy other equipment: Contax G2 and TLA200. I know that the TLA200 can over expose my photos at times and seems more likely when the subject is close to the camera. Could someone explain how the TLA200 (or the G2) determines when there is a correct exposure. Does the TLA 200 flash amount change? For ex&le a shot at 5 feet set at f/2 or at f/16 should both (ideally) be exposed properly.

Here's another question. According to some postings, the correct method is the following:

1) put camera in manual mode
2) set aperature/shutter speed for correct reading (where shutter speed is less than 1/200 sec)
3) turn on flash
4) turn down the exposure compensation.

However, I don't understand why this doesn't always create an over exposure. If you are setting the *correct exposure* in manual before adding the additional light from the flash and you don't change either stop down aperature or increase shutter speed, then it should over expose by however much light the flash gives it. Could someone explain this?

A minor query - on the g2 the x setting is 1/200
does ttl flash metering still apply, as the manual says the flash synch speed can be 1/60 or 1/200 depending on the ambient light (auto setting) But I can say that using a 167 at a wedding and using scott's procedure above but not using exposure compensation - I had perfect results

I want to take some indoor black and white photos this weekend with my G2. I have a 28mm and 45 mm lens, a TLA200 flash. The film I have is a roll of 400Tmax, and a roll of Fuji Neopan 1600.

My questions:

1. Do I need to use the flash at all?

2. If I need to use the flash, do I need to over or under compensate? The previous time I used flash (with color film) the images were too bright/white. What settings would be best?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Obviously that won't work for the G28.

Do let us know what your results are whatever method you tried.

Frankly the TLA200 is the only complaint i have with the G2 system

I don't think the TTL Flash will work well with ISO 1600 film. Then again, if your focus is accurate at f/2.8 and at f/2.0, you might not need flash. I myself would not rely on the G2 meter for this and go with a hand held indcident meter. You will most likely need flash with the ISO 400 film to shoot indoors even if you shoot at f/2. But under certain conditions, I have found that f/2 produces a shutter speed of 1/60. But make sure your point of focus is exactly where you want it to be. That critical with low light and wide apertures since DOF is an issue.

I don't consider the G2 a flash camera. I do have the TLA myself. But I rarely use it. I do wish that the G2 lenses had DOF scales and also a light up frame counter.

I like my TLA 200 and find it very useful indoors and out, it is compactness and power are features for me.

Some have mentioned the size and weight of the G2.

I find that it is a pleasure to carry.

The other day I looked a new digital camera and found that it was too small and light for me to use. Like binoculars I believe a little additional weight helps reduce shake.

Some complain about the noise of the G2.

Others have told me how quiet it is. I think that the design and quietness is somewhat addictive, inducing one to click click click.

> Gilbert,

Would you be kind enough to share your settings for the TLA200.

Do you just fire TTL or do you use compensation.

Thanks,Bryan

Bryan:

I set the TLA 200 for the lens and TTL, use the distance aperture information and have had good results at X and auto. Auto is the normal setting. I compensate when necessary with all flash systems as conditions require for e.g. a subject against a dark background I may compensate as much as -2 stops, because I am not trying to expose the background and do not want to overexpose the subject. I also shoot slide film and I prefer to slightly underexpose. I have found that this system works well under most conditions. I am more likely to carry the TLA 200 and have the option of flash than carrying a larger flash unit.
