General Flash Questions for Contax G1/G2

Clemens:

I have a Metz 54 MZ 3. It is very versitle and packed with features, and works well. I have used it with four different systems. I think it is a little large for the G2, but if the situation arises I would use it.

Regards:

Gilbert

I also have used 54MZ3 (SCA3802) with my G1. It's too large and top-heavy for field use, or for any prolonged indoor use for that matter, but that combo did manage good pictures.

At least that combo worked good enough for me not to buy another flash for G.

Clemens,

You can try the MZ 32 Z-2. There are plenty of these on EBay at reasonable prices. It is a current model - see www.metz.de for details. I borrowed one of these recently, as I hated the results from the Contax TLA200 I had bought and my old medium sized Hanimex TTL was getting slower and slower to recycle. I already had the 3802 module to use with the SCA 3000 cable for my MZ45 CL-4. I was very impressed with the 32's results from both my RX and G2 and had therefore arranged to buy one, which unfortunately Deutsche Post have lost en route to me. I am now waiting to get number two and looking forward to it. The 32 has bounce, zoom and with the SCA3802 module, as much control as you could want. It is not desperately powerful but then I have the twin head 45CL-4 for those circumstances. Wilson

I have found the following with the G series flashes. I like the TLA-140 VERY much...I get no red eye with it, but obviously, it's range is limited. It is VERY small and great to carry around. The TLA-200 gives inordinate red eye in certain conditions, but for non-people use, I would use it as it's quite powerful and compact.

I also have a TLA-360, but on the G, it simply is way too large, so if I need to use it, I'd choose an SLR body.

I've also tried my Leica SF-20 on the Gs in automatic mode, and it worked great, no red eye, but no TTL...but it didn't seem to really make a bit of difference, except I had to pay attention to the specific f-stop I set. It's more powerful than the TLA-140 (TLA-140 GN 14, SF-20 GN 20, TLA-200 GN 20), is equal to the TLA-200...but is raised up so it doesn't have the red eye problem the TLA-200 has.

I've been thinking of finding TLA-30 or something like that. More power than the TLA-200 (30), and high up to reduce red eye and allows TTL use. I've never physically seen one, so I'm not sure how big it is.

Regards,

Austin

Hi Austin,
I had a TLA-30 years ago and cannot remember much about it except that it worked well on the cameras I had at the time - 139, 137 and 167. But I think it was fairly large. I wonder if it will fully sync with the G2.

I have just looked at the Metz website and note that in the last few weeks, since I last looked at it, there has been an update and the 32Z-2 is no longer shown. I would assume therefore that this is no longer a current model if you want to buy new. They still however list the old SCA382 module for the G2. I have checked again on my SCA 3802 instruction book and it definitely says that it couples to a G2. It certainly worked on the few test photos I took with my G2 and a borrowed 32Z-2. I have just tried it with my 45CL-4 and the exposure check light flashes after firing and all the in viewfinder indications seem to work, normal sync speed 1/60th but fill in up to 1/200th etc. Again I have only taken two photos with the 45 and the G2 but both came out. Ah! The TLA30! ... You've got me drooling again!

My TLA30 has become intermittent after 15 years solid service. I think I'll treat it to a service.... it's done me proud over the years and I miss it in my camera bag... it would be the decent thing to do.

It could be a good companion for the G1/G2.... It sits somewhere between the TLA280 and TLA360 in size.... probably nearer the TLA280 in feel due to its much reduced width.... no zoom feature

, but it has vertical bounce.

You might also look at the TLA20, the TLA30's little bro'. Smaller than a TLA280. GN20, no zoom, no bounce.

An aside: all TLA flashguns work well and sync properly with all Contax TLA capable cameras. The 3 pin guns and 3 pin cameras do not have the extra features of the 5-pin TLA's.... BUT they all work properly in TTL, auto and manual mode, no matter what combination of gun or camera you choose (for TLA compatible cameras, and, if the guns have all those modes, of course

).

The 2 extra pins (over the normal sync pin) provide the TTL capability and the charge/discharge signals for the LED/LCD in the viewfinder.

Here are some figures to keep you all quiet on a d&, cold Sunday night. (OK, it cheered me up on dull d& cold UK night, anyway!)

TLA 20 Size: 66 (W) x 100 (H) x 71 (D) mm. Weight: 180 grams without batteries.

TLA 30 Size: 80 (W) x 120 (H) x 60 (D) mm. Weight: 290 grams without batteries.

TLA 280 Size: 70 (W) x 111 (H) x 97 (D) mm. Weight: 260 grams without batteries.

TLA 360 Size: 80 (W) x 131(H) x 100 (D) mm. Weight: 390 grams without batteries.

TLA 140 Size: 57 (W) x 74(H) x 20.5 (D) mm. Weight: 80 grams without batteries.

Have a look at these pages for some excellent info/photos/specs:

>Thanks Gilbert, it's exactly the size of the 54 MZ-3 that makes me hesitate. Is there anybody out there who matched the G2 with the Metz 40 MZ-3i or 2? Yours Clemens

Hi

I tried the Metz 40 MZ-2 with the G2. I found it not very handy, it is to big. But for this flash is powergrip available, called GP16. With this it makes sense. Most of the time I use the TLA200, except if the available light is very poor (red eyes). In this cas I use my good old Matz CT 45-5 .

Kind regards Hans
