getting back into it

More than a few years ago I read an article in the Scientific American about a new chip for digital cameras. It sounded real good, sound thinking and a simple concept that made sense. I seem to remember them saying that this would change photography the same way kodachrome did.

Now at this time film was still better, and I had my Minolta SRT 101. I wasn't really taking many photo's any more and I thought a small point and shoot digital would be good, but I could never bring myself to wasting my money on a digital.

Now my second grandson has been born in Florida and I decided that I had to buy something. I was going to buy a Canon G9 "$400 plus" until I read about a dust problem. Then I saw a Minolta 58mm f 1.2 lens "this is the lens I have" sell for nearly $600 on ebay. To get my 101 cleaned and set up for new kind of battery would cost 250 to 300.

Then I remembered that article and googled Sigma and have been reading for a week. I am blown away by the prices that an Sd 14 is available for now and would be a fool not to take advantage of this window because it will close when the Sd 15 comes out.

I am going to order a kit the first week of the new year. This has been a great forum and It really helped me make up my mind.

I ordered the Sd 14 today. In a way I don't believe I am doing this because there are no dealers around me so I have never handled one. I am going by what I have read on the net and all the great coments here.

You're not alone, Tom! I had a similar experience here with no dealers willing to bring one into stock on "spec", just for this mere peasant unwilling to follow the herd, seemingly as if we actually know what we want!

In my case I felt I was actually being "looked down on".

It's a very rewarding camera, Tom and I certainly look forward to seeing the results of your creativity with this artistic tool.

Yes a good way to put it. I called around and was openly ridiculed by several "salesmen" for even asking about a sigma. They all sold the lenses but the camera no. It was a bad day until I went back on the web and prowled for anything I could find on the SD14. Everywhere I read if someone owned the camera they liked it. There were very few negatives.

So I should have it within the week. Can't wait............Tom C

Hi Tom,

I got recently a second hand SIGMA SD9 and I'm still shocked for the quality of the output it produces. Even in difficult situations. I followed a similar track, first learned about the Foveon sensor, and when I was convinced of getting one, several salesmen told me about "being alone", "not having any support", "such quality not being true" and recommended me to go the standard way: Canon or Nikon...
So I was doubtful and wanted to try the concept before going on to a SD14, that's why I got my SD9 first.
Now I'm doubtful again: I feel so comfortable with the SD9 that I doubt about moving forward to the SD14...
And about being alone, having this nice forum I feel heavily accompanied!.
