Kodak new film

I have been using Fuji Reala 100 for a long time. Recently, My brother recommend me to use a new film, the Kodak HD 200. It was amazing!! The film is extremly sharp! very very fine grain!! Great colour!! I took it to the flowers show in Hong Kong and did some macro photo with this film and the result is truely amazing! I took 3 rolls of reala and one roll of this new film, the reala' were good, the images were great, sometimes it looks 3-D. But for this new HD film, all of them was great, the images stick out, you can see the flowers in front of you alive! I don't know what to say, but this new film is truely great! I have never use any film like this before! IMHO, it is by far a LOT better compare to Reala!!!

I have been using HD200 for about 5 months with my G2 and RX. I was stunned by the crispness/sharpness/definition but am a little bit less sure about the colour quality. I find it almost too contrasty and therefore a little hard. Admittedly I have been using Fujilab to develop and print at 8" x 6" rather than Kodak, as locally Fujilab offers a better service. I can then scan in the 8 x 6 prints I want and manipulate and print digitally. Perhaps on the next roll I will give Kodaklab a try and see if their colour quality is more to my liking. Overall though, I think the film is excellent and gives less grain than most 100ASA films. I am sure someone must sell it mail order in the USA (?Google search). I buy Dutch market films from a mail order outfit in the UK Channel Islands (www.7dayshop.com) at about GBP7 for 3 x 36 exp rolls. Wilson

I've just ordered 2 pack x 3 rolls x 36 exp. of HD 200 film from Adorama Camera throught amazon.
I do not use professional film to take picture with Contax camera/West Germany Carl Ziss lens for a long time, because I found that to have a good picture, camera, lens, film, film process , development, condition of chamical, photo paper and color balance control, all of above should be in good condition, otherwise, I will feel bad.

But I would like to try this film.

I want to apply Carl Ziss T* lenses to digital camera, but Contax N series camera is too expensive, anyone have good idea?

Nelson, try the sony 828, but I heard that they have a very bad fringing problems, the N is good choice, apart from being a bit expensive and heavy!

Ben:

Are T* lenses can be used on Sony 828 and Contax N series body? I'm using RTS-III, it is heavy too.

There is Contax N digital camera body sale with price $4,500, is it good price to buy or wait until the new N series digital camera body put into market?

Nelson:

The feature on Sony 828 is great! the CZ T* lenses is I think 28-280, f2-2.8! I think you can see it everywhere now and it cost about usd 1000 in Hong Kong. The T* lenses is pre-install in the sony so you can not change lenses.

The N is heavy! In term of body weight, I think is comparible to RTSIII, However, the lenses is something! To give you an ideal, I think the 50 1.4 is approx the same weight as the c-y 85 1.4. and that is what I call heavy. Wait until you see the 17-35, 2.8 and it weight more then a kilo! (but it is a very good lens)

From what I heard about the N digital, I heard they have discontinued with the production. I am not too sure if N-D is still worthy to buy at 4500, however, if you want an SLR digital camera using T* lenses, N is a good choice. On the other hand, there is some discussion regarding a canon mount for c-y lenses. I think this will be an approach that you can consider.

Finally, if you want to wait for the NDII, I think you can forget it, I very much doult it will release soon! (or ever!)

I do not understand what the last four posts have to do with Kodak's new film, other than not using it.

Nelson,
There is an excellent article on Kenrockwell.com ("How-to") on "Two Classes of Digital Cameras". The thrust of the article is that once you get up to a price close to what you pay for a DSLR, why not buy a DSLR. Now I can understand that if you wanted a compact P&S digital for size and weight. The 828 appears to be relatively large and bulky with a good lens but a very small sensor. From what I have read that it is very noisy beyond ISO 100. I do not remember what reviewers say about the 828 shutter's delay.

If instead of the 828, you purchase either a Canon Digital Rebel or the upcoming Nikon D70 for some additional cost, you then get faster, more accurate focusing, no shutter delay, choice of multiple lenses, a sensor 6 or 7 times the sensor size in the 828. You get very large 6mp rather than a tiny 8mp. The DSLR allows you to shoot at ISO 1600 acceptably.

Based on what I have read, I am not a fan of any of the current 8MP cameras digital P&S because the sensors are too small and too noisy at ISO's above 100, and they experience shutter delay.

I own a Canon A80. I suffer from Shutter delay, but it is small, lightweight, has a screen that twists in all directions, and I can take it everywhere. It suffers from everything that P&S 8MP's, but at least it is small and light and easy to carry. One day I will purchase either a DSLR or a reasonaly priced and reasonably featured digital G2 rangefinder if it ever becomes available.

Thank you for listening to my point of view. Good luck in your decision.

Howard
