M3 black paint

Vishal,

Yes, you are right, it should be that way, but is the nickel really removed? I would like to know how this is done.

Regards,

Erik

Erik,

Well yes it is REALLY removed as when the camera starts to brass - you will see BRASS under it. I am sure that he would not have such a good rep. if he was painting on nickel - users would realise this right away as the paint wears quckly esp. as a user camera.

Vishal.

he mentions that he uses "two-part" paint on parts that can't be oven baked. I'm sure he's referring to epoxy, which in my experience can be some pretty tough stuff. I've used spraypaint expoxy on engine parts and have been amazed at it's ability to retain gloss.

oven baked enamel is tends to be pretty tough stuff too.

I agree, in the pictures it doesn't look like the nickel plating is removed. My supposition is that he uses an acid to remove the chrome. if you leave it in the acid long enough, I would think the nickel would get eaten away too. if you leave it in long enough, it'll eat the entire pieces.

Honestly, I'm somewhat doubtful he's even removing so much of the chrome. the important part is to provide a quality etching that the paint can grip.

I don't know, I think his black camera looks beautiful. Can't say I would pay that money to have the camera painted and then turn around and sell it. If I had a chrome user, though, I would be strongly tempted. But I don't have such an old camera, and no plans to do so.

anyway, good luck with it.
