Seek comments for VarioSonnar f4 80200mm zoom

Hi Francis,

Thank you for your kind words. However, after re-reading John's story, it isn't clear where he was when he was looking into buying the Vario-Sonnar f/4 80-200mm zoom lens. It wasn't clear whether he was actually in Malaysia, or whether the Internet seller was a dealer in Malaysia, or whether the lens was said to have been made there.

Actually, I did not have a bad experience in Hong Kong, but it was a good experience in that I learned a few things. And I fully understand the difference between buying at local versus tourist prices, which I avoid like the plague when at all possible. One is at an advantage when one speaks the local language and culture, and at a disadvantage otherwise.

The shop I went to (which I mentioned) was not small, per se, and was full of locals. I ended up selling the Pentax SLR and lenses I bought there back in Thailand for a tidy profit, and the buyer was happy with the price, so it worked out okay.

I love Asia and the Asian people and hold them in high regard (having a Master's Degree in Asian Studies), having spent a good many years serving them in my field of work. The moral of the story is: one has to adapt and learn how to live and operate properly there, just like anywhere else, especially when buying high-dollar items like the afore-mentioned Vario-Sonnar zoom.

Wherever and whatever the case may be, the key is always to shop around and gather prices and various tidbits of information, pros and cons. For instance, the story the salesman gave about the T* lens coating and the Malaysian-made "Zeiss" -- that, in it self was a tip-off to shop and buy elsewhere.

Of course John did the best thing possible, he asked people on the ContaxInfo list. And, I hope that he did not buy the item.

Thanks for the input on the VS 80-200 T* coating pricing issue. To further explain: I was talking to a dealer in the New York City area by phone responding to his internet site. The internet price was $75 cheaper than at the big New York shops and the ad did not use "T*" in the description. However, the photograph on the web page clearly shows the lettering "T*" on the lens mount. I thought this might just be a trick to get me to answer their advertisement due to the lower price. The salesman mentioned the additional price for T* coating AFTER I had placed the order. The price "with the coating" was the same as at the large New York stores. I don't believe any Contrax CZ this lens is currently being produced without the coating and as I believe this lens is only (currently) produced in Japan. I went ahead and ordered the lens with the "coating", but am thinking about putting a stop payment on the credit card.

Hi John,

I hope we (me in particular) didn't throw you off track.

I have been to a few of those shops in NYC. As far as my experience and observations, Kowloon, Hong Kong, doesn't have anything on them as far as their tendency of being Schlick-Meisters. (Smooth masters of their art.)

Buyer Beware!

"During my recent order of the VS 80-200, the salesman said that the T* coating cost $75 more and that the lenses made in Malaysia didn't have the coating but the lenses made in Japan did. This dealer advertised the lens for $75 less on the internet. With the cost of the "coating", the cost was identical to NY street price. I didn't know any Zeiss lenses were made in Malaysia. Any comments?"

Dear John,

let me assure you that there simply does not exist any Zeiss lens made in Malaysia. Furthermore EVERY 80-200 Zeiss zoom with C/Y mount has the T* coating. The dealer simply tried to cheat you.

I made exactly the same experience with 2 US mailorder houses years ago while looking for a Nikon F3HP. They advertised in the print media (shutterbug etc.) with lower prices then others (usually 75-150USD lower). If you called them to order, they always held you for 5 minutes at least on the line (international calls) and then saying they ran out of stock but could offer you a Malaysian or Taiwan F3HP for this price, but it would take at least 4 weeks to delivber with no guarantee. Only the Japanese ones would be in stock for 200 USD more then advertised.

These are just cheap ways to attract potential costumers and later on ribbing them off. Do not even think about buying ANYTHING from this dealer. Just avoid him.
