Setting color for better printing output

Hello.
I would like to know what color setting my printer uses to print. For ex&le if my monitor colors are very bright will printer result in a bright photo printed? Or, if my monitor color, brightness and contrast settings are quite dark will it result in a dark photo printed? And if all this has connection with color profile do I better choose the same color profile for both monitor and printer? If so, which color profile is best or at least most popular?
And by the way what is a monitor calibration and how do I do that?
Any tips are welcomed.
Thanks a lot.
