Well, I just experienced why I guess many seem to prefer the gated communities, even if they're controlled by some tech company with an agenda or even the Chinese government.

I dared vent my frustration about a horrible bug in the Apple Photos app on one of the few remaining truly public forums. Soon I got the typical comment that boils down to: “you're doing it wrong, just adjust your definition of reality such that this bug becomes normal.” Normalization of deviance. This is something I definitely don't miss from the old internet. It's always the few trolls that spoil it for everyone. It makes sense that people will instead prefer to be locked up inside a small controlled environment where they have almost full control over whom they communicate with.

Luckily this very forum is like an ideal mix between the two, it's open for everyone yet it does feel like a well-behaved community…

Over here: no Instagram, no TikTok, no Twitter, no Snapchat, no Pinterest, no LinkedIn, no Facebook....
live can be so relaxing!
Now I have to get rid of What's App, and all's even better.
I got rid of Whatsapp back in 2019 allready, wonderful decision it was.

Better rid yourself of it yesterday allready :p

Unfortunately I am socially forced to use it. But, my strategy is to ignore it for as long as possible and then go diagonally through everything in one single session, deleting practically every video and 95% of all the images that would otherwise devour all the storage on my phone. This keeps wasted time to a minimum.

So they still havent introduced a "delete all" feature.

It was a social thing for me too and honestly getting rid of it cost me pretty much all contact with familymembers and 'friends' except for a few. In the beginning I tried keeping it up with some by regular phonecalls and some sms messages but it seemed for people only to have an interest when whatsapp was involved. During 'the whatsapp period' most replied back almost instantly but were interested in texting only, once I got rid of it they never picked up the phone whenever I ringed every once and also did not return the call. It was an eyeopener indeed, better to have less friends and less befriended familymembers than connect via some meaningless message-machine. Being left with only a few folks suits me much better, its much more valuable, genuine with the nonsense level brought back to a minimum.

Twitter/ X is perhaps the most corrosive social media platform. It's worse than it ever was, now being micromanaged by a petty fascist. I'm not on it, and will not go there. If you're a fan, tell me the bad part about having it disappear overnight. What's the social cost?

The damage Musk has done to Twitter is mind boggling! I rarely use the platform any more. I think his bone-headed approach with Twitter has also damaged the reputation of Telsa.
I could not agree more! The Board of Tesla are a bunch of butt-sniffers. He needs to be GONE!

Blue is optional and not required for monetization. Many young creators are finally receiving compensation for their work which is a nice change. I do notice a broader view of opinions on my feed. Great big world out there with lots of diversity. Nice to see it.
As for Tesla, i bought at $19 so rather thrilled with performance there!

When I see what Musk is doing to twitter & other stuff I really wonder how the hell he became so rich?

He's basically just really good at investing and making money, selling things for way more than he initially invested. He made a lot from the sale of PayPal to eBay, ironically he was sort of kicked out of his CEO position of PayPal due to poor leadership, but he managed to remain in the board and as largest shareholder, he reaped most of the profits. This gave him more money to again invest.
As good as he is at investing, he obviously has a poor grasp on reality when it comes to making meaningful decisions outside of the financial context. This is for instance why his ‘hyperloop’ ended up being a death trap of 2 claustrophobic storm drains with Teslas driving in them illuminated by RGB lighting, and why the Cybertruck and Teslabot demos were a total embarrassment, and why the Starship test launch scattered chunks of concrete across a vast area. At some point, this lack of touch with reality will probably backfire.
