Well, I just experienced why I guess many seem to prefer the gated communities, even if they're controlled by some tech company with an agenda or even the Chinese government.
I dared vent my frustration about a horrible bug in the Apple Photos app on one of the few remaining truly public forums. Soon I got the typical comment that boils down to: “you're doing it wrong, just adjust your definition of reality such that this bug becomes normal.” Normalization of deviance. This is something I definitely don't miss from the old internet.It's always the few trolls that spoil it for everyone. It makes sense that people will instead prefer to be locked up inside a small controlled environment where they have almost full control over whom they communicate with.
Luckily this very forum is like an ideal mix between the two, it's open for everyone yet it does feel like a well-behaved community…
