The camera is important and needs to function as designed. But, its the lens that makes the photo.

Repair/junk/sell ?
I have a black M4 body (One of the early models with the self timer. S/N 1207 264. Bought new in 1968). The shutter film advance mechanism is locked up. The local official Leica agent is estimating around $us600 or perhaps more for repair, parts, and CLA.
The body itself is in fair condition. Some of the black paint is rubbed off showing the brass underneath.

So what do I do?
a) Pay the money, lie back and think of England.
b) Try to sell it as is. (Age and rarity make it a collectible, condition doesn't). Any suggestions as to its resale value - either working or jammed - would be appreciated.
c) Retrieve it and find someone to tinker with it.

> [...Hi, If I were you - I would send it to Solms for an official estimate. And even if the final estimates are beyond your expectations, you could always fall back on your local guy.

there are several repair agencies that specialize in Leica. Try getting another estimate or two.

The camera may not be as badly damgaed as you think.

Just as the M3 has a great following, do do the early M4s. They were/are great cameras.

My M4 locked up the shutter about two years ago. I sent it to Leica NJ. They repaired it, performed a CLA and replaced a broken window all for under $300. I suggest that you send it to Leica or Sherry Krauter. Sherry is an exceptional technician that has serviced several pieces of my equipment.

Thanks - Joseph Low

> Hi Charles

Many thanks - you are not the first to endorse Sherry Krauter - I have some Leica stuff to CLA so will have them sent to her.

Best regards

just a question, does M4 carry a metering system? how is it different from that of the M6's?
