Hi
I have a Leica R4, which has a square plate on the back saying Leica Special Edition. Furthermore it shows the # I 026 on the back frame below the film advance lever. Could anyone please tell me something about the camera e.g.:
1)when produced,
2)does the special edition vary from the regular R4,
3)how much was it new
4)why was there a special edition run,
5)the # below the film advance lever (which is not on any other R4) means what?
6)how many were produced.

Thanks
Joy

That R4 must be very special.
There are two special versions of the R4: a R4 Gold (1000 pieces, 1984) and R4 Jesse Owens (to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Jesse Owens, 1986, 300 pieces with special numbers L ...).
And not so special, there was a R4s mod.P version for the US market.

Joy, Giap in the previous message nearly hit the nail on the head. Your R4 was from one of the Jesse Owens outfits Leica USA created in 1986. This commerative never sold and the finally broke up the kits and sold off the cameras and lenses, the special edition sticker is covering the Jese Owens markings, and I206 is the camera's special id number.
Happy Snaps,

Pity that R4 is cannibalized. Only 300 units were made ( normal R4 in 1986 approx. 5000), rarity grade is RR, very rare), now it is just a "normal"R4. The R4 Jesse Owens has also a special bodycap, was equipped with a Vario-Elmar 70-210 zoom, in a special case with a certificate of authenticity.
But you still can take good pictures with it.

I have a Leica R4 and am replacing the foam on the back. I know that there is foam in the narrow channel in the camera body itself. I would like to know where the foam on the back should be. Photos in the R4 manual show foam on the back, but the photo only shows part of the back. Do both the upper and lower pieces of foam go all the way across the back?

Can a Leica CF flash designed for the minilux zoom be safely used on the Leica R4? There are two electrodes on both and at the same location.
I am tempted to try it but fear of damaging them.
Will this combo produce good flash photos?

I would like to buy Leica R4s and lens 50 mm 2.0.
Could you tell me how much I should pay for both?
