Zeiss Vario lenses 35-70 against 28-85 or 28-70

For those who find the original Zeiss-zoom-lenses too costly :
Try the Tamron 35-70 lens which I like very much. The Tamron 35-135 is quite good too - but noit as good as the 35-70 (or even the fabulous SP 28-80).
They all are below 100,- in very good condition and and build very well including macro capability.
YES : I'm using Zeiss primes normally but if you want a zoom-lens....

There are better Tamron zoom lenses, by (not only) my opinion, than = those "quite good" like 35-70, SP 28-80 and 35-135, namely SP = 35-80/2.8-3.8, SP 35-105/2.8 and SP 80-200/2.8. Especially the SP 35-80 = is a small wonder, incredibly light and can be found at a bargain price.

Hi there!

I had both, the 35-70 and 28-70, and I sold both! The 28-70 is not as good as the 35-70 (sharpness at full aperture/contrast), but the 35-70 has severe mechanical problems (see my posting earlier on this forum). For the price the 28-70 is ok but do no exspect the same quality as the 35-70 or even the 28-85 which is supposed to be one of the best zooms ever.

Wolfgang

Hi Paul Fox and Bostajan Krovcar: i fully agree ur observations and using all t&ron lenses since many year except 80-200 f 2.8 and in place of it old 70-210 SP F4 and 60.300 SP. All good zooms and for macro 90/2.5 with extension tube or other verions are excellent but as i posted in other discussion suits to those on budget but cannot compete the CZ lenses having global reputation. Thanks

Hello Martin,

I use and detial tested all contax zooms, sold the 28-85 to buy 35-135. My favourate in term of optic is 35-70 use at f5.6.(Small/compact, sharp throughout the range from f5.6 upwards, wide open corners soft). For shooting wide open the 28-70 is better due to LD glass and glass moulded Asph lens. I find th 28-70 @f8 closely match the 35-70 @f5.6. I might conclude that 28-70 is almost as good as 35-70 with 1-1.5 stop disadvantage. But you gain with wider zoom, more compact, better result wide open, true fix focus zoom, mechnically more reliable zoom.(the 35-70 tend to develop irritating machnical zoom problem), the 35-135 is excellent in all fields, but it's huge. I just have to rationalise my needs and pick the lens with the charactors to match.

Hi All
I used all the 35-70,28-85, 35-135 lenses. The 35-70 is great but it has a short range (I can take the 50mm f1.4 for this range). The 28-85 is great too. I have found out that the 35-135mm is not as sharp as the other 2 above. I have heard many people rave about the 35-135 but I have tried 2 s&les of them and they are not that sharp. I sold the 35-70,35-135 and keep the 28-85. The 28-85 has great range and great optical.
