A Part of Canada is on Fire?

How is Canada doing? Apparently a part of Canada (in Eastern Canada) is burning and New York it’s being smothered with smoke? There had been photos and videos.

Terrible. And in New York you have a hard time to breath because wind is pushing the smoke there. Old people shall stay at home, people wearing masks again.

My wife is from Nova Scotia and has family there. There have been fires all around the area where her relatives live, and where we rent a house on St. Margaret's Bay every summer. Fortunately no-one has been hurt and this week the weather has cooled and they finally have had plenty of rain, but it's a mess.

The smoke - mostly from fires in Quebec - is now coming down the entire east coast of the USA and just north of where I am in South Carolina there are smoke warnings out.

A few weeks ago, fires in Western Canada made it look like that here in Colorado.

This is natural ... when controlled fires are banned. Leaving the undergrowth to develop means far more fuel and harsher more damaging fires. Even in Australia, controlled patchwork burns maintain trees, so there is less smoke.

If it were only all that simple!

I can only speak for Nova Scotia as my wife is from there, has family there that we are constantly in touch with, and we visit there regularly so I know the Province fairly well.

While there certainly is a high fuel load which exacerbates the problem, the main reason for Nova Scotia’s wildfires has been a severe drought caused by a low winter snowfall amount and unusually high (record) temperatures during this Spring. 70% of the Province’s land is also privately owned, and in small holdings, which complicates the organization of controlled burns. Further to this, unlike most Western Privinces, Nova Scotia’s flora is highly varied with many different tree species which means that controlled burns cannot be guaranteed to eliminate only the understory.

I do agree that something needs to be done but there’s no easy solution here and things can only get worse as the climate continues to become warmer and drier.
