Contax AX

Zörkendörfer may be the answer for autoaperture, but I'm more >interested in the focus.

http://www.zoerk.com does only have an alternative, no autoaperture-adapters.

The possibility of expanding the system with >Contax MM lenses, some of which are PRIMO, really appeals to me. here..]

i dont understand this.

Zörkendörfer does not have autoaperture adapters.

(sigh)

Michael:

When I wrote about "expanding the system," I meant that I could start with an AX and Contax TTL flash for around $1000 US (AX used on KEH.com is $750), plus adapter from Zörk or Contax, plus the Hassy lenses I have now; later, if I chose, I could get something really cool, like the 200mm f/2 (yes, I know how much it costs). But, from a fiduciary standpoint, the AX would be a really cheap way to weasel back into 35mm autofocus which would still allow plenty of room for growth.

buy the angenieux 180/2,3 its cheaper and fantastic. a little bit slower than my 135/1.5(manual) but much better. btw: the latter is very thick and heavy(3kg?)

rather the zork adapter get the contax version, it is cleaner than = zorki.=20

mehrdad: thanks; that's what I thought, too.

the 200 f/2 was just an ex&le. At that focal length, plus at 300mm, the AX matches up quite nicely with Canon/Nikon. Since, if I got back into 35mm work, I wouldn't want to go past 300mm, the 300 f/2.8 would be fine, albeit a LONG ways (and mucho money) down the road. Until then, the 300 f/4 would do just fine.

Hello,

It appears that the AX has been discontinued.
If true, does anyone know where I still might be
able to get a new one in the US?

Also, I would like to know from some long time users of the AX, what their experience has been with reliability and repairs.

>Paul,

I purchased my AX used, and shot it for several years w/o a single problem. Great camera.

michael.

I have not had one problem with my AX, and find it a vastly usable and superb camera. Though I thought it was large at first, the size becomes an asset in that it is easy to hold and balances well. It's actually lighter than the RTS III, at least it appears that way ;-)

I would not hesitate to recommend one, unless you expected FAST autofocus...but with fast lenses, the AX does work just fine, even in low light, but it isn't made for sports.

One added benefit of the AX is the built-in 10mm extension tube that can prove invaluable for some really cool pseudo-macro photography.

Regards,

Austin

Paul, I'm not sure where you got this information from, but just last Saturday I was talking to the Canadian Contax rep. who stated quite categorically that the AX was very much in production.
One of us has got the facts wrong! Can you please advise me of your source(s)?
Colin

I was told by the Contax office in Canada that the AX had been discontinued. That was at least a year ago, maybe two. The Contax office is closed now and the stuff comes form New Jersey. Jeff
