D70 vs D100

making decisions as simple as this is easy. I have an open mind to go to forums to see what others are saying but it really comes down to the "hands-on" moment. This occured at Berger Brothers on May 1st 2004 for me.

The Nikon Rep was not a Pro Photographer (true) but I did test the waters with questions he was able to answer objectively and not with bias. For instance, I asked him why didn't the technology of the SLR Nikon digital move up to 8 megapixels.
He implied that the cheaper Nikon 8700 was basically a marketing move on Nikon to get both products ((D70 and the 8700) a shove.

I will not argue about the quality your acheiving and I'm sure your loving it, but my hands on this D70 didn't feel right for 13 bills or 10 bills without the toy (18-70mm) lens IMHO.

Having a CP5700 for 3/4 years, I sold the bloody thing. After making Photo's for over 12 y with my 6006, the 5700 was a disappointment. Now the I have the same problem as Alan. I bougth the 5700 to quickly, not examen all the pro's and con's of digital photography. In Holland the D70 is hard to get, so every time I go to the shop, they are just sold out.
When askin' the salesman about the camera (pro's and con's) I get the same story as with buyin the 5700. Wonderfull this and wonderfull that, nice stories. I was so sick of the 5700 (when used to the 6006) that i sold it with BIG loss. But better than shooting one more picture in anger and frusstration.
I'll keep one reading your comments one this site and make up my mind.

But a D100, it's a proven performer for a few dollars more than the D70. Use custom tone curves and you have exceptionally good photos.

I beg to differ, I don't think your that educated of a consumer, all due respect. What do you think that this nikon rep sits in these board rooms with the head honchos and they fill him in on their intent or marketing moves, give me a break! This guy is shooting from the side of his mouth, thinking he knows all but knows nothing.He's no different then a best buy sales rep or a car salesman.Allan did you not understand when I said that the D70 is a entry level DSLR and at 6 megapixals is plenty for the vast majority of people buying this camera. Most people buying the D70 are printing 4-6 5-7 or 8-10
and some at 13-19 as I said with excellent results.As for the 8 megapixels more is not allways better as the 8700 pixel size is smaller than the D70 and the D70 smaller than the D2h.If 8 megapixels are important to you wait for the D2X or possible the D100 replacement.You could also look at the canon mark 11 or 1Ds. When I bought the D70 I did not buy the the kit lens because I know it is only a consumer lens, but capable of very good results stoped down.Having said that the 28 to 105 is also a consumer lens and not much better if better at all.As a matter of fact of the two I would rather have the kit lens, at least it's AF-S and wider than the 28-105, since I have the 17-35 f2.8 and 80-200 f2.8 none of these lenses apeal to me.One last thing if the F100 feels right how the hell does'nt the D70????
 
As i understand that the 17-70 lens with the kit, is "just" a consumer lens. The lens that came with the 6006 (35-70) was only a consumer lens. It was well enough for me. Wat I liked about the 6006 was the handling of the camara, buttons and knops are at the right place, something i completly missed on the CP5700.
Does anyone knows how the handling is of the D70 compared to the 6006 (f601).

I understand that the 17-70 lens will not fit on my 6006 camera due to the 1.5 factor??? (the photo will be too small).

you called the 18-70 lens a "light consumer grade lens". I'm in the market for a D70. What you you consider an appropriat lens? Also does the DX18-70 lens have the 1.5 multiplier effect?

A point of clarification. It is the smaller sensor - not the lens - that produces this effect.

A 35mm camera has a film gate of 24mm x 36mm approximately, while the Nikon DX sensor is 23.7 x 15.6 mm. It takes a 23.7 x 15.6 mm section out of the middle of the image that the lens projects, so to be pedantic, it might be more properly described as a cropping factor rather than a magnification factor. Only the Kodak 14n/SLRn/c, Canon 1Ds and the extremely rare Contax are free of this.

The DX lenses are specially designed for use with sensors, not film. Lenses for film project the rays of the image at much more acute angles, leading to less than optimum performance with Beyer mosaic sensors and performance can vary widely from lens to lens. While not optimum, most Nikon lenses work OK with Nikon dSLRs.

Even with the full frame sensor and no magnification factor, the original Kodak 14n was a disaster with many Nikon and third party lenses.

Canon is said to be developing a line of digitally optimized lenses, and all the lenses for the Olympus are said to be designed from the ground up with digital in mind. While the Epson rangefinder will mount any Leica-mount lens, there is a substantial list of not-recommended glass.

All the variable-aperature zooms (those whose maximum aperature vary with focal length, like f/4.5-5.6) are not the best Nikon glass. If you want a zoom, the f/2.8 constant aperature zooms (also the 12-24mm f/4) are considered professional grade glass...I think that they have some other initials like "ED" attached to their name. The 28-105 and the 24-120VR ARE NOT Nikon's best glass. The composition and optical quality of these lenses is not nearly as good as their constant-aperature zooms and, consequently, don't cost nearly as much as the 2.8's. I have a 28-105 that I DO NOT USE because it's NO GOOD to me below f/11 and almost all my portrait work is shot at f/5.6 or lower. ALL LENSES USED ON THIS CAMERA HAVE A 1.5 MULTIPLIER EFFECT BECAUSE OF THE SIZE OF THE SENSOR. The only digital SLR cameras that don't have the 1.5x effect are the Canon 1Ds and the Kodak slr/n (14n). There's some misinformation being give on this forum by the uninformed - or misinformed - there's no such thing as a "stage" in which the D70 becomes a 1.5x - it's 1.5x with ALL lenses - bad for the wide end but fabulous for the tele end.

P.S. - I use cameras like this every day and they do fine. If you want a digital camera with interchangeable lenses, then you can't beat this one for the bucks - period. The prosumer cameras that have been mentioned are NOISY and will not give you the results that the D70 will. Having said that, I don't care what ANYONE buys or thinks....I'm just putting in my 2cents :D.
