D70 vs D100

Boris,

The D70 is a joint effort here. As a parent, I could only give to my wonderful daughter what I would give to myself. We hope to capture as many frames as we did 14 years ago beginning this Friday.

Bob,

I will certainly keep you all posted as of my findings as well as others as I venture into the digital domain. I have all of the computer gear in my Midi-recording s&ling studio for this.

Stay in touch!

Alan,
That's wonderful that you two will share some special moments, but don't side step the issue. You made it sound like you were making a well thought out choice for YOUR art/photography. You never indicated anything different. Unless your daughter is in a photography class or is of some special talent, then this camera is for you. Either way, you rubbed more than one person the wrong way and we come to find out that a $200 point n shoot would have probably done the job?

My ex wife was Magna Cum Laude and is a Phd. She had the very annoying predisposition towards being book smart and life dumb.

The gear makes NO difference what so ever!!!! I have created art with a shitty 3.2MP point n shoot (Nikon 885) camera. I will take an oatmeal container, put a pinhole in it, use photo paper as film and come back with a print that you could hang proudly on your wall or in a gallery.

What I'm saying is before you start asking questions and getting people all riled up, show some sort of consideration towards common sense. For the record, I have made my living from photography in one way or another for more than 15 years as a combined total. I also have made my living as an educator, teaching people how to be airline pilots. I am a commercial pilot and instuctor pilot. If you were in my class I would have to seriously evaluate your motives behind your questions. In my class, most of the time but not all the time, I answer a question with a question (90/10). That's how learning takes place, you find the answer for yourself. If the answer is always provided, we end up with many people who have no critical thinking skills and are a drain on the whole.

Now take that D70 and come back here with a CONTRIBUTION, tells us something we don't know.

Boris

Allan,

I tip my hat to you, and appologogize for having been harsh with my words. Either way we look at it, you will get to experience advanced digital control now, and decide whether it's for you or not.

Sincerely,

I followed the discussion for some time now. It's wonderfull to see how Alan manipulated us all!! (would this be his normal way of living??)

At the end he did buy the D70...mission accomplished.... I would say!

Lets talk about de D70/D100 for a change.

Paul

Alan

well well you finally did it congratulations. Alan remember one important thing digital is more akin to shooting slide than film, what I mean is that it has a much narrower exposer latitude. So try to expose for the highlights. I don't know if you know about the ability for the D70 to allow you to download or create you own custom curve. There are many out there like White Wedding V3.4 or Provia V 3.3 etc. that work very well. And to get the most out of this camera you must shoot RAW.Alan as you can see this camera is all about settings settings settings! Once you got that nailed down the results are truly amazing. Oh and one last thing, from here on in please do not insult our intelligance we all know you bought the camera for yourself. Good Luck.

Paul,

thanks for your kind words. I'm sure the entire family will benefit from this purchase.
I'll create a gallery of photos either on my official website or my daughter's in the not too distant future.

Alan Russell

Vince,

I appreciate your advice in how to approach the D70 but the camera was mainly for my daughter and myself. Over this year, she took a few pictures using my F100 and seemed to be motivated in taking more shots while asking questions about lighting and camera settings I was thinking it would be a good move to let her learn a Nikon Digital camera as a follow up. After E-mailing Ken Rockewell a few times, he suggested to me to just buy the D70 and not venture into the 8700.
It will be a learning experience for both of us & I certainly look forward to this.
If I have further questions, I'll ask the Pros here.

Alan Russell

What is your opinion regharding the use of UV or skylight filters on digital cameras. In particular the D100 using the 24-120 vr & 80-400VR

Mike,

Digital cameras have the filtration built in. Adding a skylight, simply puts two unnecessary glass surfaces into the optical path. If you are using automatic or manual white balance, the camera simply neutralizes any benefits the filter may offer.

If you are thinking that they afford protection, do as the pros do and use a lens cap. If you are shooting under extremely abrasive industrial conditions - say close-ups of sandblasting - then an underwater housing is recommended in order to protect the whole camera, not just the lens. Modern lenses are very tough and stand up to decades of normal daily use.
