Digilux 2

I'm excited about this camera, guys. My National Guard unit is headed to Iraq soon and I'm hoping to replace this with the huge D1X I use on stories. It's not as heavy and should still turn out good reportage images.
After reading the specs and talking to Leica-philes, this little bit of technology is exactly what I'm looking for in a digital camera (Well almost. I'm interested in a digital Leica M, but aren't we all?)

Panasonic also have a new digital camera model "Lumix DMC-LC1-K". It looks just like the Digilux 2 and have the same lens and specifications.
Can anyone told me what is the different between these two camera?
The Panasonic is selling in Japan now about 150,000 yen or about 1,350 USD, but the digilux is selling in USA for about 1,850 USD.

Surin: where do you live? You won't find the Leica and Panasonic versions on sale in the same country. The cameras are more or less the same, except for the casing, although Leica maintains that there are differences between the two. I'm waiting eagerly for the first proper review of the Digilux 2. Early reports are very positive.

Hi Surin, you are probably right. The Lumix and the Digilux 2 are almost the same stuff. Maybe the Panasonic camera doesn't meet the mechanic precision standards of Leica, maybe the tolerances are some nanometers more, but this shouldn't make any difference in handling. The lenses are manufactured by Leica. The electronic features - including the picture sensor, which is the most essential part besides the lense - have been developed by Panasonic for both, the Digilux and the Lumix. (This is not a secret). And it is a question of honor for Leica to deliver only high-quality lenses, no 2nd choice rubbish. So don't hesitate to go for the Lumix if it is available - as long as you don't need the Leica brand for representation.

Heard from a U.S. dealer that the new Leica Digilux 2 will be in-stock this coming week....they actually were expecting it on Feb 19, but alas were told by Leica that the instruction book was delayed, and kaboom...so much for timing.

Speaking of timing: does anyone know about Digilux's shutter performance? I have a Canon G3 (also a Leica M7; reason for me being on this site) and its shutter lag is simply horrible. Frankly, like a number of Canon products (including their DSLRs) the overall ergonomics are horrible.

If the D2's shutter is nifty-quick, then I'd be interested in getting it...even with its pretty-steep price...

Cheers,
John

Does Leica ever offer firmware updates on their digital cameras?

Just went to their web site and alas, no where is their a "support" or "download" area...

I am coin-tossing between the new Digilux 2 and Panasonic's virtual-clone DMC-LC1. Panasonic does support their products....while Leica seems to be still a bit in the "mechanical era" even though they're introducing more sophisticated digital hardware. And as we all know, sophisticated digital cameras often go through firmware upgrades.

Thanks for your help.

John

hi gang
I was at the focus show in uk and the guys on the Leica stand said the uk dealers had got the Digilux 2 ready for release friday 27 feb 04.

I just bought one of the first Digilux 2's to be sold in Seattle. All I can say, as a long time user of Digilug 1 - this is a wonderful camera. By far the best of the digitals bar none - i shoot Canaons and Nikons DSLRs professionally. The 2 is worth every cent, even compared to the classic Leicas, Hasselblads and others I own. The improvements are terrific, perhaps with the exception of the EVF, I expect it will take a while to appreciate that particular oddity.
