First specs of 300D

Sorry about the other reply, it is the first time I'm using this forum... Well, I will try again:

Here is the link to the Canon USA web site about the new digital Rebel: http://www.canoneos.com/digitalrebel/digital/index.html

There is a manual available for download. The specs are a little better than the Rebel Ti (flash compensation, X-sync 1/200 s, maximum shuttle speed of 1/4000s).

Based on the facts and charts I decided to buy the dslr Rebel with the canon 18-55 lense. bought a 70-300 Quant. lense, and a couple of extra batteries from sterlinf tek for $12.. i am now playing with my new toy. Great color and fine resolution. They don't give you CF however nikon gave me an 8mb with my 5000. after 40 years of nikons from the F1 to the 5000.I have converted to canon. try it you'll love it.

I have used the 19-55 for over a week now, in a variety of shooting conditions. Results are sharp enough, but I did have some softness in an archive document reproduction shot I tried (which came out tack sharp on our other system, a Nikon D1 with a Tamron 28-200 XR lens). I do suspect that's more the result of a slow shutter speed/very small aperture series of shots that I took without triggering the camera via remote.

Vistek is supposed to ship out the rest of my Rebel order by Monday (I'm missing the accessory kit, AC power adaptor and the 55-200 zoom), so I'll be able to post a more detailed response later.

Great camera for the price, though; skin tones are bang on, very nice detail, and it took me the better part of 15 minutes to figure it out (versus the couple of days I spent on the D1 when I first got it).

On another note...

Anybody else experienced connectivity issues with their Rebel? I managed to get the USB connection working once on my Powerbook G4 running OS X, but now I can't get the Canon utilities to recognize the USB connection,

It's more or less of a pain, since I'm used to the "turn off camera, remove CF card, use CF reader" workflow, but I would have liked to use the off-camera control functions of the software.

Our local Canon tech support couldn't say much on the subject; the technician I spoke to told me "it's a brand new model, we haven't even seen it yet".

The pleasures of being an early adopter, I guess...

By the way, the new Sandisk Compact Flash Extreme cards work beautifully with the D300. I use a 256 mb CF Extreme, and my card writes and reads are extremely fast.

Depends on your needs. Some of the custom functions like being able to turn off AF assist lighting, setting flash sync, and enabling mirror lockup are important under certain shooting conditions. If you need the larger/faster burst capacity, then the price difference to get a 10D becomes a very small issue.

The D300 meets my needs quite nicely at this time (candids and scenics are quite easy to take with the Rebel). If I ended up getting more action photo ops, then I might seriously consider adding a 10D to my arsenal.
