General Flash Questions for Contax G1/G2

Speaking of flash problems, I have a Contax 645 and a Metz 60 CT-4 = flash. I have had the flash unit much longer than the 645. I am finding that in = low light situations, the camera will not focus in the auto focus setting. = I have heard that Metz has an accessory that will fit on the hot shoe and = talk to the camera. It is connected with a special cord adapter that has an = auto sensor that, I seem to understand, will help the camera in the focusing = and TTL mode. If any of you can help me on this or send me to the correct forum, I would appreciate it. I just need to have the camera focus as = my eyesight is poor in low light situations where I have to focus manually.

Thanks,

Truett=20

>So, in practice, you meter and use the exposure lock to fix the ambient light settings with the flash switched off; then switch on the flash, set to TTL and shoot. The TTL metering should add the right amount of flash light to balance the shadows. Right?

Thanks, Simon and Richard, I'll try it again... this time, ignoring whatever the camera tells me. I just tend to "read" too much into settings when using automatic stuff.

I'll go get my prints right now and will come back with (hopefully) good news. Thanks for your help! I do appreciate it!

Well, I'm surprised... The camera, apparently, regulated the flash output. Except for two washed out shots, the rest of the exposures came out reasonably well. Since I kept notes on each shot I can tell one thing: the system works!

Since the Contax G2 has center weighted TTL flash, should you dial in positve exp/comp for a very bright background and negative exp/comp if your background is very dark?

Michael,

in my eyes flash compensation is not different from daylight compensation.

Assuming your subject is something like 18% gray, it depends upon what you mean with "background".
If the background is far away and your main subject covers a certain amount of the center area, it should not matter wether "background" is black or white. In this case the flash will be stopped when the appropriate amount of light is reflected from the main subject.
With "background" becoming a greater part of the center area, compensation gains importance.
Extreme ex&le: Matches attached to a black wall (you get the idea).

And if your subject is out of the center - well, then you encounter the limit of Contax G TTL-flash.

Now I'm getting the info I want! So then, if my subject is my 25 pound white cat and he fills most of the center up, I have to dial in positive compensation to get the proper flash exposure?

Michael,

glad to help you. That is exactly the way it works!
Nevertheless, since G-flash is usually quite hot you could also try without any compensation. I actually never used positive compensation up to now, but negative nearly on a usual basis.

Your post has hit me on that Contax repair staff can permanently adjust the body in this way. Next time I stay at Hamburg I will ask them to do that!
This will be so handy since I will not have to struggle with manual exposure any more in all that fill flash situations.
Glad that YOU helped me!

Any experience using Nikon SB flashes with G1 or G2? I have a Nikon SB30 flash and if I choose manual setting, the flash output can be regulated manually, but not sure if Nikon SB flashes will damage the G1 circuit or not. Thanks.
