How do you like i t here

I'm on two. One I'm a little bit disappointed in with how certain threads which are quite nasty and vindictive have been allowed to just go on and on about certain members which are on DPR that actually have a hard job to do. I won't go into any more details than that, but some will know what I'm referring to I would imagine.

I was leaning the other way with that forum, but not so much now, put it that way.

Danny.

Are you referring to the Mods that were on DPReview?

Excellent here so far. Moderation is top notch as well without any of the draconian anal retentive nonsense that went on with DPReview.
Even the 'Bickersons' are allowed to have a say here without slashing and burning going down unnecessarily. Smile.

Yes, I've seen those threads. There are a few members over there who appear to be carrying significant baggage and the site owners seem unperturbed about so much dirty washing being aired in public. If that's the accepted standard, then it may well become a new version of the wild west.

So how's that for a some mixed metaphors!!! :ROFLMAO:

"1.5 With the publication of contents the users themselves – or in the name of the copyright owners – give the owner the non-exclusive right, to duplicate, modify, change, publish or translate without any restriction of time and location on these sites."
I like this site, but I’m going to have to give the above clause some thought.

It's good to be informed. The reality is that most sites that allow the posting of images seem to use similar language. It does make you wonder.

Another website I’m on specifies their terms of use this way, “If you contribute material (information, data, software, photographs, articles, reviews, stories, forum postings, etc.), you also automatically grant us an irrevocable, royalty-free, transferable and worldwide right and license to modify, publish and reproduce that material in perpetuity, for the purpose of operating, displaying, distributing and promoting the community and its services without any compensation to you.“

That one specifies a purpose which limits the use of any material to use on that particular website. It also goes on to explicitly state that Copyright stays with the contributor, and that if the website wishes to use the material for purposes not stated above, the owner will be contacted to negotiate terms of usage.

I like that wording a lot better.

I never knew about 'focal'world' but I think you gotta go with what feels more right for you. i.e. ease of use, friendliness, layout etc. One thing I noticed with this forum... When you reply to a thread, you can still see all the posts in the thread above where you are typing. Brilliant.

I had a look at focalworlds' terms regarding our image rights, and they seem to be similar as here, except this site doesn't explicitly say 'You retain copyright over the Content'. I'm not in the small print business so maybe I read it wrong.

"You are granting us with a non-exclusive, permanent, irrevocable, unlimited license to use, publish, or re-publish your Content in connection with the Service. You retain copyright over the Content."

It is not neccessary to state that 'You retain copyright over the Content'. Copyright in any work of art automatically vests in the creator of the art at the moment of its creation. Granting a licence (which merely protects the Owner of the site from breach of your copyright by hosting your image) does not extinguish the original copyright.

I like this site, but I’m going to have to give the above clause some thought.
That seems more a standard legal exclusion to stop disgruntled uploaders of their images from launching legal actions against the site owner rather than an open-slather loophole to misuse of said uploaded images.

Agreed.
