I'm going on assignment tomorrow!

Maybe "assignment" is the wrong term. I volunteer to shoot the home meets for my daughter's swim club. I'll be shooting the afternoon session. On the other hand, the club's director said any family who doesn't have at least one volunteer has to pay a $250 fee. (so maybe it IS an assignment?) I think they over-step their authority there a bit, but a lot of parents will not help otherwise, and it takes a lot of adults to run a swim meet.

The venue is indoors and lighting is tricky, because at certain angles it is just a well-lit indoor pool. From other angles, there are big windows, which backlights the swimmers, causing underexposure. It changes once per lap. I think maybe spot metering is the solution. Focus tracking and face/eye focus doesn't work on swimmers, so I'll probably select a large central spot.

I will probably shoot my slow Tamron 70-300/4.5-6.3 on my Z5. Although the lens is slow, the sensor is big, so the images are fine viewed full screen.

I am considering buying the 70-200/2.8, but it is a lot of money to shoot my daughter's swim meet once or twice a year. The rest of the time, I would not bother to carry it. I shot with a rented one once last year, and it was great.

Wish me luck and keep your eyes peeled for hopefully a couple of good shots next week!

Keep the Tamron. With F2.8 the DOF is too thin. You will end up with images on which you can not see enough of the face etc. Swimming is fast, water drops all over which might cause problems with AF. The more DOF, the better if you are not very experienced in such shootings and have not the AF of the Z9.

A few sample shots, before the meet starts. Two of them show the corners that are tricky for lighting, one warm-up shot, and one of a coach writing the heart info on a young swimmer’s arm.

By the way, it is MUCH easier to upload photos from a phone than DPR.

My camera beams 2 MP images to a Nikon app, which then sends them directly to my iPhone Photo Library.

You are doing ok - you are quite right about backlighting, also reflections, and finding the points of interest.

Should be an interesting exercise to take the parts and create a narrative.

Please be patient, Dirk. ;)
I think I took about 600 pix over a 5 hour period. I will probably spend an hour or more tonight just culling. That will probably bring it down to 200 or less.
Then another couple hours with some light editing, before uploading to Google Photos. Every parent whose child swam in that time frame will be looking for a pic of their little darling.
Only THEN will I pick maybe the top 10 for here. Might be another week. Wife wants to go for an eBike ride tonight.

Here are a few photos from the meet:

I got so tired of blue background, I made a couple B&Ws:

One can imagine that a lot of shots are ruined by random splashes of water...
