Manual Focussing Screens

Thank you very much Marc, that's very helpful, and not what I had expected.
It is only the left hand corner taken off and not the whole fin ground down, as on mine the fin is square at the top, and is at the same height as the top of your fin.

I'll have to check it carefully when I get the 5D, and just take off the minimum necessary from that corner.

Cheers,
Matt

What is the actual height of the fin that clears the mirror. It'll give me an idea what clearance is required. I have a micrometer so I can check it out and make any adjustments that are necessary. Thanks.

Ok my first image post...lets see how it goes. Race Point Cape Cod Canon 5D with Contax 35-70mm @35mm iso 100 @ f16 aroun 1/20sec...standard 5D screen

Here's a probably outdated list for Leica on EOS from the FM forums. It's pre-5D, but it may help.

Still struggling away with the supplied screen, I'm looking for the Ee-S but no luck so far.
Here's a shot from today Canon 5D with 35-70mm @5.6 iso400 @70mm

Dermot, try Norman Camera 1 (800) 900-6676, to see if they have any left.

That's where I got mine based on a tip from another Ziess on EOS user pal of mine.

Finally got my hands on the S screen, thanks Mark.
Here's one my first shot's. 5D with a Zeiss 50mm 1.4 at f2 iso100.

I have not been checking this forum for a long time, as I am spending more time on FM because of the wealth of information I can get there on Canon stuff.

Anyway, I got myself the 5D about a month ago and promptly proceeded to look for a manual focusing screen. I tried the expensive Brightscreen option (they have only the plain matte screen for the 5D) and didn't see that much of an improvement, so I returned it.

I then got both the Canon Ee-D and Ee-S screens and returned the Ee-S screen, as again, I could not see any difference between this and the supplied Ee-A screen. I am currently using the Ee-D screen as I was having trouble with my horizon lines. The grids on the Ee-D works great and is quite subtle compared to Brightscreen's in-your-face grid lines.

I am now just waiting for someone to make a microprism center screen for the 5D, and I am hoping Katz Eye will make one soon. The split-image screen with a microprism collar would be my 2nd choice for a manual-focusing screen.

If anyone has any info to share about microprism or split-image screens, please let me know.

Bobby

When I installed the Ee-S screen I though either I'd made a mistake and put in the wrong one or they had just sent me another standard screen. It does look exactly the same but I found focusing is a little easier.
I'd of like'd a split screen like I used on my 1D11.
