N to Eos adapter is it possible

I am either going to have to start drinking more or a whole lot less--that last one did not work. DJ have you shaved any mirrors, and if so who did it??? Thanks, Jack

' 2007 - 2:17 pm,DJ, IMO the Zeiss 50/1.4 was the only dog in the N line up with the worst Bokeh of any 50mm I ever used, and I used 3 different Zeiss N 50s before giving up on it.

Canon color is improving with these newer lenses ... I think they are improving their coatings, but still a far cry from Zeiss T*.'

Not many here or on FM might agree with your experience on the 50mm f1.4 N completely but it is an opinion and as will all opinions, must be held as valid. I have a good copy and find the bookeh wonderful. Like I mentioned earlier, I also have the 50mm f1.2L and am waiting to see which would be better suited for me.

I will agree with your statement regarding canon color improving. Yes. The new 50L does produce some outstanding color, but it still is lacking the "Zeiss-ness" factor, which is quite pleasing to say the least.

Well DJ lenses should be ready I just heard from Bo-Ming as well and my lenses should be ready about the beginning of July (not far off my July 1 birthday). I am excited as h-ll. Jack By the way has anyone sent out there Canon 5D for Mirror shaving???

And the bad news is that my 17-35 apparently has a dead AF mechanism

. I'm almost a month past the 14-day return period for Central Camera, so I queried TOCAD if they were doing in-warranty repairs for this lens - what are the odds? My other option is to screw AF and get the conversion for the exposure control and EXIF communication, which is actually of much higher value to me than the AF. Let's see what Bo-Ming and TOCAD say. Sigh.

Jack, I've never had to shave the mirror - I have a 1Ds MkII and the worse I've had to do so far is trim the rear lens baffle of the Leica 21-35.

DJ,

I've had good luck with Tocad.

I dropped my 17-35 which resulted in the body getting dinged up and the filter threads getting bent. I had a contax uv filter on the lens at the time. The filter glass was broken, with the filter being stuck to the lens. No way to unscrew the filter due to the bent threads. I sent the whole mess back to Tocad, who sent it to Japan. Came back looking like new and working great, and at a pretty reasonable cost as compared to the lens value. I think I paid about $300.00 for the repairs. If you need, I can probably dig up some contact names and phone numbers at Tocad.

Best of luck.

Mark, sure, any contacts are always good. Let's also see what they come up with hopefully soon. Usually I like to give the normal channels a chance before calling in the artillery

Very sorry to hear about the 17-35mm AF mechanism. Of all the lenses, that one's gotta hurt the most.

Did you try asking Central Camera if they would swap it out for another one. What did they have to say about the fact that they sold you a non-working copy. Or is this something that happened in shipment.

Hopefully Tocad should cover that under warranty. Chances are lens has to go back to Japan as Zeiss Germany will not service it due to the electronics involved - so I've heard. With any luck, it should not take that long.

Actually this is the lens I least mind not having AF working. I haven't contacted Central Camera because it's almost a month past their return window, the lens was new so it's not as if they knew, and it's a hard-to-find out of production item which is also not very popular.

Bo-Ming will repair for just the cost of the AF motor if he can find one, but I told him if he can't within 5 days I'm just converting it without the AF. Let's face it for landscapes in the under 24mm range AF is marginally useful as compared with having full auto-diaphragm coupling for wide-open metering without stopping down and the EXIF data available in the image file.

DJ,
Get the lens fixed now--you will regret it later--"maybe not now but soon and for the rest of your life" as the Bogart movie line goes.
