Today with your Pentax

Hi Jason My thoughts here but I could be wrong. .
You tested your camera focus and it was fine in test conditions and controlled conditions. I imagine your camera is fine but you are mis calculating what you think you see out in the real world with that lens sometimes.
Modern screens can be problematic at times. They are designed to be bright and not necessarily accurate for manual focussing unfortunately. They need a split prism really in some situations.
Use your Live view to focus when you believe it is the right shot to check focus. I won't say too much but basically you have to decide whether a shot is worthy of a 2nd opinion via Live View. Only you know when this is necessary.
I may be wrong and there is an issue with your camera or lens. This is just my opinion on the matter.

In June, several clicks backward, I posted a couple of images from a little park near us where the pond had been emptied. The pix I posted were somewhat "naked" looking without water. I said I'd go back and have, so here are a couple of the little pond in Sharon Park with water included.

These are great Jason and particularly the colous in the acorn shot is great on my screen.

I manually focus that old Nikon most always even wide open. Yes there are hiccups but it is rare I have ruined the shots. It is so much more fluid way to shoot manually focussing I find with bokeh photography. No matter how great a camera is at focussing AF wise I still end up manually focussing because I want to enjoy the experience of shooting and I want to see ideas on the screen move in and out of focus. It is not easy to explain to the tech folks to justify it because they will just bark back at you YOU ARE missing focus. The experience and ideas is completely different when I manually focus shooting even the smallest amount of depth of field I prefer to manually focus. The nikon screen is about the same as Pentax ie it works mostly but there can be hiccups by eye on the screen.

I agree with everything you said, Dino. Manually focusing is most of the fun of photography for me, even though I make errors now and then and ruin shots. I'm still curious about the latest autofocus stuff, but I don't want to spend the money and carry around a huge lens, like the HDFA 70-200mm, when I can carry two or three small manual focus primes that I'd find more fun to use anyway.

I didn't have any focus problems today, although I will say that my K28 Shift lens didn't impress me with sharpness and image quality at the edge, though.
We went to Mainz today. Turns out we were in too big of a hurry to do much photography, but I did manage a few. Here's today's catch.

Of the series, posted on the Flickr collection and DPReview, I like the tree branch or whatever it was lying in the green and golden grass. I find that a pleasant image to view.
I realize, you can't always show 'em all :)
