Is there anybody who has actually worked with HSS and likes it?
Just from the specs, I think it's pretty useless. Not TTL-measured, exposure + flash have both to be set manually. Plus the absurdly bulky 54-MZ, which nicely fits an SLR, but certainly not a range finder.

Any other opinion is welcome.

> Flash attachments =============================================================== I would never use a large flash unit on a hot shoe of any camera. One "oops! oh shit!" and you have some very expensive damage. I use a flash bracket which attaches across the baseplate and is screwed into the tripod socket. These used to be common. I do not know what is available as a new part any more.

One clear statement.
Can anynone explain me what has the use of flash and the HSS with a Leica M body?
More. Since you can push a 3200 iso film to 25000 iso what would you do with a flash?
Moreover. since in the Leica M lens range there's a pretty Noctilux f:1 what's a flash for?
It's clear, it's only my own opinion.
Stefano.

Stefano,

Where I live, it gets light at 6:00 am and dark at 6:00 pm, very day of the year. Twilight lasts about 10 minutes. I appreciate being able to use flash when I need to.

what's a flash for? =================================================================

Flash can be for: 1. When you want or need more depth of focus 2. When you need to stop or freeze movement 3. When you want to use a fine grain film 4. When you need to balance the lighting on a difficult subject. 5. If you cannot afford a Noctilux!

Hi,
Has anyone bought and used the 1.5x Eyepiece
Magnifier on the M-models? Does it make that
much difference?
The price is a bit high too for such a small item.

Regards,
Venture

Do not forget fill flash, which I find useful quite often even at daylight to enhance colours or reduce contrast.

For that purpose you do not need the big cannon, but high X-sync.

Obviously I know what a flash's for...
But I keep on thinking that a Leica camera is made for other purposes than for flash photography. Clearly it's only my opinion, but is the opinion of a person that works with Leica M and keeps on making exibitions without ever using flash. It's an idea of photography very simple. Maybe in this time it's too much simple. But I believe in it.
Stefano.

I do not think anyone is arguing that a Leica is not an excellent choice for shooting without flash.

The point is that the camera is so versatile and it can satisfy the differing needs or purposes of more than one style of photography. And many people wish to learn and master many of the different skills of photograpy.....

"What's flash for..." Most work with a Leica is available light, and when I have a SF20 in my pocket
I consider that "available". The trick is to use it sparingly to only fill in the harsh shadows from time to time. Leica M TTLs aren't TTL for nothing. It is a great help when the light is against you getting the shot or not. I disagree that you need a high sync speed. A 6 or 8X ND filter will bring down the sync speed to the 1/50th of an M sometimes even when shooting outdoors (not that I wouldn't mind a bit higher sync speed in a M). Almost all the wedding shots in my Gallery on this forum are made with a SF20 and a Lutz diffuser.
