Can you tell something about the history of this photo, why they painted their faces?
Dirck, I'm glad you asked. What you see in this photo is part of a mock wedding ceremony held in Gunma Prefecture, possibly, every two years. The best part of the ceremony is the procession because the route the wedding party takes is along mostly gently sloping hills dotted with beautiful flowers, a very picturesque landscape, great for photography. This reenactment celebrates the folklore of a local area in Gumma Prefecture, which is only about an hour's Bullet Train ride from Tokyo Station. :D
